"Universal" rear racks?
« on: November 02, 2009, 12:11:45 AM »
Following on from the successful application of toasty handgrips to the MZ I'm looking at finding a rear rack for it, now after enquiries, Hepco and Becker are unable to supply unless I want to buy a full set of new panniers and topbox (the answer ryhmes with "Fork" and "Toff"...)
So.. I'm now on the hunt for a "universal" rear rack in black, broader the better (the plan being to fit a nice plain (large) black topbox and have rack either side still available for other stuff.

So, anyone bought anything similar recently that they'd reccomend? Anyone got something suitable lying in their shed they'd like some beer tokens for?

Smudge,
if you can find a univeral to fit you will be very lucky - to my knowledge nobody makes them for the Skorpion

Thanks chaps, I've seen Hepco and Beckers offering but I couldn't bring myself to give them £180 for the privilege of throwing away my existing, perfectly servicable, pannier racks in order to fit a slightly less tidy set... (damned expensive tail-rack at virtually £200 including carriage  :o)
I believe it is possible to get an aftermarket rack allegedly for the Skorpion but the one I've seen wasn't a great fit and marked the tailpiece  ::) (I'm glad to say not on my bike!)

The rails of the existing pannier mounts are about 31cm apart though, and a colleague at work tells me has a generic black rack and large givi topbox sitting in his shed, so I reckon the money I would save getting that, over anything new, should more than cover the fabrication and welding of a couple of mounting tabs each side to bolt it to  8)
Of course if the width turns out to be wildly different I may have to reconsider, but he reckons it will be pretty close and he's a mechanic to trade(!) time will tell.....!

Aye Smudge,

One came with Herman, had marked up the plastic tailpeice with large furrows in grand style! ??? Not very large either, about the size of an A4 at best! Never fitted it and let it go with the bike. Suspect your blacksmithing skills will be better than those used in it's flawed construction. Something off the back of a quad might suit! ;)

Off to 'sheet alley', Bill.

Well it seems I have the offer of one of these: http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?catref=576300&tier1url=Luggage&tier2url=Hard-Luggage&tier3url=Givi
along with a somewhat corroded mounting kit from an ER5 and a perfectly serviceable mounting plate...
A little more than I'd hoped to pay but (obviously) massively less than the eye watering new price  :o

Looks like the mounting rails can probably be persuaded to attach to my existing pannier frames, and if not it should still be possible to fabricate something a little more subtle than Mr Brooks' homage to the Forth Rail Bridge  ;) ;D

The only question is whether or not I can fit the job in before the Tibbie Shiels weekend!  :-\
