Registering questions
« on: October 23, 2009, 09:17:28 AM »
Hello Chaps,

The racer is sitting in my garage mocking me.  I've poured a (scottish) fortune in to it (some of it from here) and, undeveloped, its not going to get anything like that back.

So I think I'll keep it anyway, and get it built, but I  will lower the spec of the motor, to make it warm, if not hot!

What would be involved in putting it on the road?  Daytime MOT is fine, noise not a problem.  I just mean about getting a vehicle, which has a frame no but doesn't exist as a manufactured machine, a number plate.

Even a Q plate wouldn't be awful- its only really going to be a "twice a year" bike (if I do this).

Any experience??

Certainly used to be something along the lines of:
Get insurance
Get an MOT
Go along to your local DVLA office and apply for a Q plate and road tax*

This may have changed since SVA and I suspect you may now have to go and get the bike inspected under the SVA rules however  ::) Oh and they'll want evidence that you bought all the bits legitimately and it's not just some sort of ringer/collection of knocked parts... (I know it's not, but they seem to be a suspicious bunch!)

Of course the illegal way would be to use the identity of a Skorp (or similar!) and ge the frame / engine numbers changed to suit (as you modify the original bike of course) then get an mot/tax conventionally. But that as mentioned would be illegal so you can't do that.

Andy, done it several times now, and the info here is correct

get it mot'd (on the chassis number)
get it insured (on the chassis number.....they will cover you for a couple of weeks before they insist on a reg no, least thats what carol nash did)
If you want an age related plate get a letter from Spondon (or whoever made the chassis) detailing date of manufacture
fill out the required forms
take it all along to your local DVLA office (much better to go in person)
queue up for an hour
look innocent
plead ignorance
bingo, a week later you get a letter which you take to your local number plate specialist and you're mobile

Gents,

Thanks a lot for the info.  It is just something I was toying with...  A "what to do with this" type-of-question.  It would cost more money to make it a good racebike, which I'm not that inclined to spend.

I may stick the skorpion motor in it to get it (easily) mobile.  And then I thought much along the lines of smudge:

Of course the illegal way would be to use the identity of a Skorp (or similar!) and ge the frame / engine numbers changed to suit (as you modify the original bike of course) then get an mot/tax conventionally. But that as mentioned would be illegal so you can't do that.

The engine cases even say MZ on them, and plod doesn't seem to know anything about road-type singles...  However, it would also mean getting rid (so to speak) of the skorpion.  And (with my advancing years I do seem to be getting a bit less "devil-may-care") the legality of it is not even questionable.  If I kill someone, and questions get asked, there is a full online documentary of my attempts at ringing a motorcycle.

So I wont do that....!

(did you get that?     I     W O N ' T    D O   T H A T  !!!   T H E    D O D G Y   I D E N T I T Y
T H I N G!!    D E F I N A T E L Y     N O T !!!!)      (yet)

Not sure how happy Dave Pearce would be about putting it on the road, rather than racing it, but its possible to get a letter I spose.  And a "I made this pre-73" letter would suit the scotsman just fine...!  However, dont reckon that could be wangled.

Thanks all for info,

andy
