Well, this was a TC first, a two-event weekend. Whilst naughty boys stayed up until 4.00am talking bikes in a field in Dent (how does Simon do it?) others of us were manning a club stand at the Classic Mechanics show at Stafford.

I set off around Midday on Friday with a heavily loaded radio-less van. Furry John had texted to say that he was having trouble with his van hire, but I had no room in mine and had to leave and hope for the best. The drive up was horrible. I was on my own, in a silent van, in heavy slow-moving traffic. It was 4.00 when I pulled into the traders entrance of the showground.

I  found I was the first to arrive but the Carmarthenshire army that Mark had brought in his van (along with a very nice Norton 16H) was soon there and we were then joined by Trevor (with SRX). Furry John and Molly arrived with four bikes and we set to erecting a modest but well-formed stand. Pride of place went to John's as-new Manxman, but the stand was large enough to show off all the bikes. Bruce arrived, but didn't manage to get his Norton on the stand due to the late hour. Boyd and Martyn also showed up to lend moral support.

As usual we stayed in the main hall bar until the end of the setting up time and then retired to our big tent to cook bacon sandwiches and drink some beer.

Saturday started busy and carried on that way. Almost immediately it become obvious that the Manxman was a big draw, you could only rarely see it behind a scrum of curious showgoers. Boyd joined us again and all the TCers helped man the stand. Bruce still couldn't get his bike on the stand because H&S concerns meant that motorycles couldn't possibly be pushed around whilst people were in the building  ::) We eventually got it on the stand after the show, so at it least it was there for the Sunday. Whilst waiting to help Bruce get the bike in I spotted Class Bike writer Rick Parkington and collared him for a chat about how much I admire his work and how it has brought me back to reading CB after a long break. He seemed a bit shocked and shy which made me laugh because I can't be the only one who thinks he's a good bike journalist.

Sunday was another busy day and we had some good news when the Manxman got a 'highly commended' award slapped on it. Lots of TCers showed their faces over the two days and it was good catch up with them. Later in the afternoon came a text from one of the Dent party, Simon, saying that he had killed his DR's engine and was waiting for recovery near Walsall. That took some of the shine off our mood.

We knocked down the stand in record time and I was very grateful for all the help that people gave to get the van loaded. I then endured another radio-less solo drive back to South Wales and got home at 8.45pm... shattered but happy.

One interesting thing was the number of other clubs who asked how we were and said they'd missed having us around. The 'sheds' and 'Singles night' stands seem to have stuck in the memory of many showgoers and exhibitors. We had a lot of nice things said about our efforts at the show. Hats off to our ex-showstand maker, Boyd Brooks.

Mark - was your mate ok in the end?

My mates and I had a great time in Stafford, good to meet some more TCers. The stand with the quality and mix of bikes gave a good representation of the club and was well received by the show goers.

Plenty of food to go around thanks to Graham, bacon and sausage sarnies in the morning and a spag bol in the night, and Bruce also provided his infamous 'Beef in Beer Stew' which went well.

Spent lots, bought loads.

Mark

GC - Ifor was fine thanks.

Well, this was a TC first, a two-event weekend. Whilst naughty boys stayed up until 4.00am talking bikes in a field in Dent (how does Simon do it?) others of us were manning a club stand at the Classic Mechanics show at Stafford.

I would like to add my thanks to those expressed by GC for the help given pushing, lifting and arranging the bikes by TC'ers over the weekend. The stand did attract a lot of good comment, due in a large part to efforts put in by GC before the show to provide stands and notice boards. We had a very shaky start to the event, first the van we had booked had its previous hire extended, 3 hours delay, then the replacement was not returned and was unable to be contacted. Another hire company finally provided the van, we left at 3:30pm instead of 7:30am only to meet 4 accidents on the M5/M6 sections with further delays making a 5hrs 30mins trip to Stafford.
We had a very good weekend in the company of TC'ers old friends and new. We got home about 8:30 pm on Sunday evening with no damagage to any bikes whatsoever, again thanks to GC for averting what could have been a disaster.

Glad to have been of help over the weekend.  Another couple of bikes would not have gone amiss, but the extra space gave plenty of room for people to have a close-up look at the Manxman.

What a beautiful machine that is!  A well deserved "Highly Commended".  Apparently it was only beaten by one point to being the best race bike on show.  Drat these Laverdas eh John?

I think I could drive to Stafford and back in my sleep now, after doing it 3 times over the weekend.  I may sort out some suitable camping gear before the next show!

Some great looking machinery on show as always, plus Fast Freddie Spencer.

See you at the next one.

I think John and Molly took some piccies, my camera is fubar so I couldn't.

One thing I forgot to say as I was describing the event is a big 'Thank You' to all the TCers who attended and helped out. Nothing would have happened without their efforts.

Although everyone helped out a great deal, I have to single out Molly and John who brought four bikes to the show, their commitment to attending the show made the rest easy.

Trevor, yes try and camp over next year (if we get a stand), it's fun.

Mark, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, it was good meeting your mates, although that one fella (Tim?) can't hold his beer  ;) :D

Bruce, sterling service as ever.

Thanks for the piccies, Ian.

Stand looked fine , I must say. Well done John. Nice to see the judges making such a well deserved award. All the nicer due to the unexpected nature of it , I'm sure.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer couple than Molly and yourself.

Rob .

Right, try again with an old photobucket account:-

I am sure there is a tidier way to do this.

If you study John's last piccy you will see the huge bulge made in my jeans by... a massive collection of £1 and 50p coins amassed by selling off my collection of Classic Bike magazines at 50p a time.

Even after paying for my diesel in coins I had bloody loads of the buggers left and I think there's about £5 in coins still rattling around loose in the back of the van.
