Heated grips?
« on: October 12, 2009, 09:25:54 PM »
Evening all!
With the autumn starting to nip I was wondering about perhaps trying some heated grips on the Skorpion. Now I have always just used muffs so I know stuff all about heated grips (other than on every bike I ever borrowed with them only one side seemed to work  ???) so...

What are the best type?
What are the best value?
Where is the best place to get them?

Cheers Chaps  :)

Why thank you, as I'm reluctant to post my address on a public forum best to give GC a shout and he'll tell you where to post them.
I shall look forwards to the postmans visit now, thanks awfully  :) ;) :P

Steve H has recently bought the wrap-around type that I used for my Austrian trip in january. They are made by Tech 7 and we both bought them from Busters (HERE). They are pretty neat and quite warm enough. £24.99 at the moment I see, but still not as good as free.

I have a set of proper Oxford grips on the outfit and they were good too, with the added advantage of a very good variable temperature control.

Keep your muffs on though, they let you make the most of the heat being generated.

M and P's(and probably Busters) have got a deal for Hotgrips and Optimizer £55 http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/902001/Bars-And-Footrests/Winter-accessories/Oxford

or the grips only at £40.

Been using Oxford grips for the past 5yrs. Think I paid about £35 from Heinz Gherkin.En route to the Elefant in 2006 {-15 ish } had to turn them down to lowest setting, too hot.
Combined with trail type knuckle guards, spot on .

The Tech 7 wrap-round grips work quite well, and at £25 are good value. They do add quite a bit to the grip diameter and because they are on the surface they get quite hot, the instructions suggest winter gloves.
I'm planning to chage my handlebars otherwise I would have gone for glued on grips.
Another option is these HERE which retain the original grips.

Yeah, I know the guy, he's a Mark aswell. I was considering having a chat with him to see if we could register for club discount on our orders.

How much business goes their way with the TCers?

Ello smudge

I have Oxford ones on the DR.  Just started using them again!

Anyway, dont get them- I've been thru 2x electronic switches (rubbish, they also need a good 12v, otherwise they switch off, ie, when indicating!) replaced with a switch from maplins, they seem ok.

Muffs- definately (not re-fitted mine yet)

However, be aware of battery drain, specially on a lecky start bike.  The DR is K/start only, so has a tiny batter (thus not great for heated grips).  However, it sucks the life out my battery.  Not a problem with a kickstart, but not much fun trying to bump-start a skorpion on greasy slushy roads.

Still, maybe the skorpion battery (bit of a weak point anyway...) will handle it better.

Cheers for now

Other heated grips I've read mixed reviews on, more positive than negative(only2 levels of heat control) are the Daytona ones. I've just bought a pair but not yet fitted.

Hey Andy
How did you wire them up to the switch?I am having the same problem with my grips,so i bought a 3 pin togle switch from Maplins, and wired thus : red wire input, black common and white output. But the grips do not get warm.I have checked the voltage on the out put which is reading 13/14 volts.
Any IDEAS????

Alan
