Hands up

Who is switching over to a winter bike? And who is getting back into the car until spring?

I'm hardly riding at all now because I use the van for work and not the sidecar. However I always used the same machine every day of the year... and it looked like it  ;)

Yes, you'll be able to spot it by the fact it looks just like my summer bike....

i used the same steeds all year round (cbr6 and c90).

i wouldn't knock anyone who just rides in the good weather, for most of the time between now and march motorcycling is a fairly miserable experience.

i do get pi$$ed off when fair weather riders (sunday only as well) knock the condition of my bike. there might not be a single part without a scratch/dent/corrosion on it, but she runs like a swiss watch. a 150mph swiss watch.

Now that's where my tatty hacks fall down, they are all limping along with various maladies and infirmities. My hacks are as well maintained as they look  :D

Italian motorcycles (namely my Pegaso ) don't seem to stand up very well against British winters that well so its 4 wheels for me this year

My winter bikes are in better nick than the summer ones. The weather is always drier through our winters.

Ride the same 2 and 3-wheelers all year round.
And they are kept outside.....and they look like it.
But I think I maintain them reasonably well.

I'll be riding my Wilderbeast this winter. Only got the one bike working at present so, I've got no choice. When I get my SRX400 up and working yet again, I expect I will vary which one is used each day or week, or by whichever set of keys comes out the bowl first. Hmm, that sounds like an interesting idea for a game, a bowl full of keys and lucky dip....

For some odd reason I do more miles in the winter than summer.  Why ?

And I'll run whatever is working.  Just MOT'd and taxed the Beemer so it looks like a goer, whereas the XT needs some elctrical work, MOTing and Taxing so not yet.

Most would probably consider all my bikes 'winter bikes'.

Come on Steffan, what did that bloke say about your Skorpion on the IoM ?

Thinking about the standards of maintenance, my bikes generally look "well used" after a couple of years but when I sold the Mastiff the motor sounded as good as it's much lower mileage replacement and everything worked properly.
I'm just not so good at washing and polishing them after miles or rain/sleet/ice/salt etc etc, generally I just want to give the chain a quick spray then get inside and warm up  :-\

It'll be the same bike as my summer ride as I only got the one :'( (Abigail doesn't count on account she lacks a fitted engine, carb, loom, any sort of lectrics, brakes, tank, seat, blah, blah, blah!)

Think the difference for winter will be when I decide to stop cleaning her. Used to try and wash off the road grit on weekends and never managed to get to it before it got to the bike. This year (and soon) I plan on giving the old girl a final really good scrub then coat her in grease/spray oil and let winter do her worst. She can live out the winter under her protective layer then get a really good scrub in the spring.

Any reccomendations of a suitable protective gundge to smear over her??

Due to complicated parking problems at work I will continue to ride the RS daily. Swopped the rocker box last weekend, as it was leaking oil, and after much shouting, jumping up-and-down, and hitting with soft mallet, it still does. This weekend changed the fork seals as a steady stream of filth was leaking from under the gaiters. As its nearly thirty years old I suspect on going maintenance will be ..... er .... on going! Hopefully it will hold itself together over the winter months as it really makes my day start with a smile. Only time will tell! The Bandit is mostly an ornament these days......

I remember reading once that 'back in the day' riders used a grease/petrol mixture to coat their motors... sounds revolting but if your engine emerges shiny at the start of spring then who cares.
