How do you make your laptop much much better in one day?

Uninstall Vista and install XP!   ;D ;D ;D

Simples. I can't do the funny click sound that Aleksandr makes after saying 'simples', but hey, just imagine.

Even though Compaq say it cannot be run by XP, it can. Took a little while to find some of the drivers, namely one for the coprocessor, but I got there in the end. My laptop battery now lasts at least 75% longer, and the runs everything that much faster. Vista, don't go there.....not least for its resource munching capacity, it also doesn't like certain games, for example Microsoft's Age of Empires III !! How does that work, Microsoft O/S doesn't work with it's own games.  :D

I'm a happy bunny after a hard day's internet surfing and downloading.

Aye Hackers,

More power to your elbow/co-processor!

Same problem at work. XP Professional and Office97 are still the 'standard'! Vista is definitely 'bloatware', and gets replaced as a matter of course on all new machines.

Disckeeper 10 is also worth getting as it sorts out the defragging process efficiently, when compared with the MS defragger. Also doing a boot-time defrag can help as well. SteveL or SteveH are far better placed than I to explain.

My regards, Bill.

Office 97 - have got a netbook with Office 2007 on it..

DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!! it is total pants!  MS have tried to make things easier by having lots of pretty buttons, but it takes up most of the screen and hides stuff in not so useful places.  Mind I still bemoan the death of Excel macro leanguage and the advent of VBA....

Still trying to keep an open mind, but with a 900Mhz netbook running XPpro, a MacBok pro 2.2 duo running OS X 10.5 and XPpro on the Bootcamp disk (runs as a native 2.2 dual core XP machine) and a Virtual XP machine on the OS X - I know which one I prefer.

One of these options sits in the background supporting me to do what I want to do and the other sits in my face trying to control what I do. And doing it so slowely too.

However that all said - glad you have a laptop that now flys compared to what it was.

Anyone have any thoughts on Windows 7.  I am told it is pretty good and I may consider it as my Bootcamp OS if it is better at its job than XP

R

Windows 7 looks good and I toyed with the idea of buying it rather than going to XP. Amazon is doing a special pre-release offer of £65 for the full home edition! Either they know its pants already, or, want to corner the market? I am tempted as I like to play with these gizmos, though I expect compatibility issues again with Age of Empires etc. Additionally, that's £65 towards my power commander for the MT-03....  ;)

Oh, another thought on Vista. The name was changed from Longhorn to Vista, just like Windscale was changed to Sellafield!! Trying to hide something, were we MS?
