Wax Cotton Kit

I know most of you don't like it, but I do and what do you reckon to these as an alternative to Barbour, Belstaff or Chequered Flag

Makes me wonder what the secret ingredient is in Belstaff kit that makes it so expensive. Apart from "the name" there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in the ones that I've had a look at.

It shows how out of touch I am, I thought £159 was expensive... and you say this is cheaper than a Belstaff? My first Belstaff came from a catalogue and my mum paid it off over about two million weeks.

A shop advert in this months Classic Bike, Belstaff Trialsmaster waxed cotton jacket £379.99!! Or you could always go for the Belstaff "Long Way Down" jacket in Cordura (Ooooh!) for the bargain price of £599.99. I know the cheaper jackets are probably slung together in China, like most things nowadays, but Belstaff's used to be reasonably priced. I did see some Belstaff leather jackets in T K Maxx the other week(sad I know) and they were knocked down from £640 to £320, still too bloody expensive for what they were, thin leather and more of a fashion jacket than a bike jacket.

Belstaff went trendy some years ago, I know this because my brother bought one and he couldn't ride a bike to save his life.

Barbour went much the same way.

The Peregrine branded one is apparently made in the UK but not trendy at all.  Can't grumble at the price either.  My Belstaff cost £99 or thereabouts in 1980.  Uses 12oz Cotton too which is heavy stuff.

When the current nylon Lidl jacket wears out I may go for it.

Belstaff are owned (if I remember rightly) by one of the fashion houses and is seen as a legacy brand with all the kudos of the bike background etc.

It is no longer a motorcycle brand.

Mind compare Drizabone stockman jackets and cheaper options.  50% of the price and 20% of the weight...

Digging this one back out I know but thought I'd better report in.

I too have been considering a wax cotton jacket and liked the look of the Peregrine one in Richard's thread. DON'T BOTHER! The Peregrine one is a fashion item only and bugger all use to a motorcyclist (IMHO) Mine is going straight back!

Too be fair, the guy there was very nice about it and the service when ordering was great. But this is not a motorbike jacket, not by a long way.

Next one I'm trying is made by a guy in the midlands. Brand name is 'Claymore' Feedback is good and they've even had a mention in MCN (for all that's worth). Shall report back once it turns up. I have to wait 2 weeks as they are made to order. Mrs Squirrel has to measure me first. I've told her, even though it's a jacket, they need to know my inside leg measurement

I understand the build quality/cut will vary compared to the named brands but I have asked and received replies that they are 12oz material which I believe is the same as the Belstaff ones I've looked at whereas others are as low as 6oz, 8oz and 10oz. Surely they must be worth a look.......or not?

Belstaff was going bust and was bought up by an Italian designer who is a mad keen motorbike nut.  Business is now run by his son, who is a mad keen motorbike nut.  No longer made in the UK, but in Italy, but the material is still mades especially for Belstaff and is a particulaly high quality and expensive raw material.

I guess there is a premium on them, but they are not just waxed cotton - cannot remember what it is about the material, but it was unique to them in the original form and as far as I understand still is.
