Site content
« on: July 29, 2009, 08:05:00 PM »
I'm looking for some input into how we can improve the site content. One suggestion put forward, by a few people, has been to provide a means by which members can create and edit content. This seems like a good way forward but as with most things it takes time, before committing to doing this I would like to get some idea of who and what it would be used for.
For me two good examples would be the project pages, each project could have its own page and the owner could update with pictures and text when they need to. The other would be model specific pages where all of the club could contribute content, a page for each model detailling weakness, modifications, exhaust systems etc would be useful.
The system I am thinking of using has an editor similiar to that used by the forum and is based upon the WIKIPEDIA model.
If anyone feels they would find such a system useful, could they respond to this thread with some idea of what they would use it for, if there is sufficient interest I will try and get something up and running.

I agree with you Steve .A projects page would be ideal. Also a travel page to post articles ,pictures etc relating to recent trips and favourite rides . Thumper club is after all a riders club first and foremost .

I like the Wiki idea, but keep it closed to members only else some dolt will consider it amusing to "change" it.

I think if you are going to allow members to start/edit/update pages, this should be tied in with the imminent (i hope) paid membership and a secure password, to avoid any old muppet sodding about on our/your site Steve (individual passwords would allow you to see who had done what, and thus if a password had been compromised)......I know this sounds a bit PC, but we could end up with problems without some sort of control.

Steve, agreed it needs to be controlled. I'm hoping to tie the WIKI in with the forum (SMF) credentials, so in theory I can control who has permissions to edit create etc. I have yet to try it though !.

As for club memebrship that is on hold untill I get some form of commitment that membership applications will be efficiently dealt with.

This one's been chewed over long enough now Steve, I and several others have volunteered to do the job in the past, so why can't we allocate the task to someone and start moving forward?....I thought this had all been resolved and GC was implementing it with the next (soon?) newsletter?....or am I mistaken (not unusual these days)

Hi all,

As you know, this is quite a relaxed club but I think sometimes we forget that the guys that actually run it do so between trying to organise their own lives (which is hard enough).
I feel if people want to get more involved then they should be encouraged to do so, thus spreading the workload. I think we should do the public liability insurance thing, collect subs, and then if someone wants to organise a club outing, they're free to do so.

BTW, a popular thing I think would be a facts/maintenanc guide page on the basic thumpers we all own...

Cheers all

Not wanting to spill one thread into another.... But...

That's the thing!! Thats what SteveL is saying! He has volunteered (as have others) but aren't permitted! Months back when it was first identified that GC was struggling this debate raged, and solutions were found, and bu99er all happened! What some of us now are saying is why bother?? the forum works great, we're all mates together and quite capable of meeting up where so ever without any sort of 'formal' structure.

If it's all too much for any one they can give up at any time and (with the possible exception of SteveH) it wouldn't make the blind bit of difference to how things are currently.

Heyho! (sigh!)
