a funny thing happened...
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:50:08 AM »
I was on the way home last night on the skorp, with swmbo on the back.

THe front brake had been going off for a while, and I thought "I really must have a look at that".  I wanted to put it off till the first of July, so that I wouldn't have to pay a month's (ie June's) tax on the other bike, for just a day.

(yes, I know, get the jokes in now.... ::)  )

However, a caliper seal popped on the skorp, leaving me with little in the way of brakes, 2 up, in central london.  However, all was fine we got home with engine braking and the rear brake.  Only locked up once...!!

However, this is not the "funny thing"...

I looked over the DR last night, and declared her fit for duty.  I went to tax it this morning.

However, the DVLA have the tax as being renewed on the 1st June!!  I KNOW it expired in april.  I remember sorning it.  I got married at the end of may and definately havent taxed it since then...

This is the legendary "bank error in your favour".  HOwever, I dont normally display the tax disk on the bikes.  They just get nicked.  But I like to have them....

So how do I go about getting one?  A replacement can be issued for £7.  Which is cheap, for tax!  And when will it run out?!

Anyone else EVER had this??!

Am definately going to go home and double-check the paperwork!!

cheers

Check the paperwork then make your £7 bet if you feel like it.

If they realise their error they'll come looking for the £65 and won't be wanting to hand back your £7. You could end up talking to them about obtaining the disk by deception if they really wanted to ruin your day. You'll have no real defence, you can only claim to have confused the Scorp, the DR, your wifes car, Grandmothers Winebago etc. That's probably enough to avoid anything worse than paying up, but who knows the tax man is getting to the point where he'll get the thumb screws out for a tenner if your the sort of person who won't hit him back.

The alternative is to write/ring them and point out they made an error. You will be safe from the claims of deception but will be short of the full amount and will have a fair bit of hassle getting DVLA to understand you want to be honest. Start now and you might have a tax disk on July 31st.

If you go the £7 route the replacement disk will expire on May 31st 2010 assuming the computer says you paid for 12 months in June.

I think I'd call DVLA and ask if they really really think you've paid. Tell then you can't find any record. Log the time of the call and who you spoke to, then get the £7 disk if they refuse to see sense.

Ok I came clean and called them (worried about possibly my bike had been cloned!)

They said.  Oops, you're right, not taxed, dont know how that happened....!!

Checked again online, and it came back normal....

Oddly enough it happened  a while ago back in Melbourne.. The convicts made several copies of number plates which made it out onto the roads via different licensing offices... hahaha took the authorities a bit of time to sort that out. (before pooters). Now maybe if you guys had not sent out that group of cons, we wouldn't have something to laugh about.
