Anyone watching the TT on telly?
« on: June 10, 2009, 08:28:31 AM »
I missed most of last night's prog on ITV4, but on Monday I watched McGuiness belting to victory. I have to say, he's a bloody delight to watch, smooth isn't a big enough word to describe his style.

Oh, and Mrs Onepot is developing a thing for Guy Martin (and those bloody huge sideburns).

Not seen any of it - do not get digital TV here - but heard Guy Martin on Radio 4 the other morning.

So GC - are we going to see you sporting GM sideburns?

Yup, seen most of it. Still waiting for Guy Martin to win something.

It'll be interesting to see the electric bike race on friday (I think). They showed a few clips of test laps yesterday, looks like great fun.

Yes they look quite interesting - average lap times of 80 mph+  so they're not hanging about!  (Ok the other classes are lapping at 125+ but electric bikes are in their infancy)

I seem to remember reading somewhere once of a guy who set an electric speed record with a much modified Sinclear C5 ....about 175MPH  :o.......brave man...

Yeah.....well.....last time on the island I got up really early one morning (5 ish) and went out and frightened myself sh*tless on at least 3 occasions....(like...the beginning the middle and the end)....and managed a 78 mph lap on my srx so anyone who can do 80 or more (most people by the looks of it) have my utmost admiration and respect!

Yep watching the tt's on tv. Took SWMBO to the island for a weekend in feb. Prior to this not a bit interested in the iom now she watches it religiously and you've guessed it she has this thing about Guy Martin. Seems that yellowbellys stick together.
Now to get permission for the trip next year, only hope she doesn't wanrt to come.
Guy martin is certainly getting interest for the tt's as he has been on both radio 4 and 5.
Pity he missed out on a victory yesterday.

I've never been to the TT but I have been over to the IOM a number of times as we have a customer over there. Once I managed to arrange to be working there on a Thursday & Friday and stay on for the weekend with my CBR600 for company. I did a couple of laps of the TT circuit - no idea what my average speed would have been (not very high as there are quite a few 30mph limits on it) although I did hit 150mph in a couple of places.

The IOM is a great place to visit even when the TT isn't on, especially as it's very pro-bike. A couple of incidents on that visit come to mind:
1) Turned up at a museum in Peel with my bike gear on. As soon as I walked through the door the security guard came straight over to me. Not to give me any hassle though - he wanted to know where I got my Day-Glo Gericke jacket and also wanted to know if I him to lock my riding kit and helmet in his room while I went round the museum.
2) On the way up to the very north point of the island I passed an old couple in a Volvo on one of the country roads, with me doing at least 100mph more than they were doing. When the arrived at the car-park at the lighthouse they came straight over to me when they got out of their car. I'm expecting a bollocking about the speed I was doing etc. but no - they'd spotted the UK plates and just wanted to know how I was enjoying my visit, with the old-boy wanting to know "what it'll do"!

I've got an unofficial agreement with the customer that they'll schedule a meeting that I need to attent in person for a Monday or Friday while the Manx GP is on later this year. They offered to do it for the TT but unfortunately I couldn't make it...

Went one better than watching it on television and went over there in person instead, along with about 15 other folk mainly from the Lampeter area ind including our very own Steffan (Skorpion) and occasional contributor Keith (W650).

Sadly the 'big' sidecar race was cancelled after a nasty accident on lap one.  The Senior was great though, new lap record followed by one of several bust chains - really we must think of something better.  Very exciting, marred I believe by a fatality.

The TTxGP was fascinating to witness, I spent quite a lot of time in their paddock and the hospitality tent.  All mad keen in a a different way to the petrol teams and it was marvelous to see the Indian based Agni team win, largely from Pune University I believe.  The swing arm bore the logo 'Made in India'. Cue lots of jokes about 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'nice to see Enfield win one at last'.

I do like the Island, though next time I think I might go to the Manx GP - which is apparently where the TTxGP is heading for next year due to scheduling problems.  It seems that if the electric teams hadn't been put in for Friday morning the sidecar race could have been rescheduled then - which would have upset racers, sponsors and factories I suspect.

Indeed!!  Skorpion ran superbly, apart from falling off her stand on the way home and wrecking a clutch lever. As always the only drawback to the bike was the pillock riding it and its only limitation was the lack of nerve between seat and handlebars.

Watching Mr G set a new average time of 131.2+mph on the course during the senior convinced me that there is no relationship between what I do and actually riding a bike. I also came to realise that present company excepted most motorcyclists - as represented on the island are a bunch of thoughtless, self important, unthinking wankers who if they had been hounds would have been drowned at birth. How people like that manage to go around corners so fast when they cannot see past the speedo on their handlebars is beyond me. But rants aside a good time was has by all..

Beemer did rather blot its copy book in that when I woke up in the Travel Lodge on the Saturday morning the alternator had packed in.  Tests on the Island revealed that the rotor was misbehaving intermittently, more off than on.

Motobins came to the rescue and sent over a new one, fitted and away.  In the meantime a battery charger kept things running.  Wish it had a kickstart.

Lesson learnt - don't get urgent items sent over by Parcel Force, they took a whole day longer than 1st class post would have.
