Can highly recommend the municipal campsite in Arromanches, great facilities, clean, friendly and only a stone throw from the beach. There was a double page feature about Arromanches and the surrounding beaches in the Saturday mail, its a fantastic coast line and hard to belive what went on there, the cemetery's there are also moving places.

And, only about 10 or 15 miles away (I seem to recall cycling it in a short afternoon), is Bayeux and another fantastic municipial campsite.

Those French municipial sites are bloody marvellous aren't they? Most large villages and towns in tourist areas have one and they are clean, well-run and very cheap.

Aaaaaahhhh, Brittany and Normandy, quiet country roads, good coffee in bar tabacs, moules frites and beer in cheap roadside restaurants, calvados in friendly little bars. Where's my bloody passport!

What I used to do was chuck my bicycle on the direct train to Portsmouth, get on a ferry to St Malo, Roscoff or Caen and then spend a week cycling on backroads. Why don't I do that anymore?  ???

Arromanches was where me and the wife had our first ever visit to France.  Lovely place, and like you say the cinema is something else.

Some people from my other club go over there every Easter - bit cold for camping at that time of year though.

I think Trevor is talking about the beer. You can never get a nice warm pint in France.

Thinking of "cold" camping... was looking at bell tents the other day and discovered you can get a mini wood burning stove to go in them, how cool... erm... warm is that!!  8)
That sounds like the tent of choice to me  ;D
