Weekend Debrief......
« on: May 18, 2009, 02:16:09 PM »
Me and #4SRX went off to the Northwest 200, left home mid-day thursday, got an overnight from holyhead to dublin and travelled up to the north coast friday morning.....the ride to holyhead was great....300 miles of uneventful and almost completely dry riding, with some pretty good scenery once off the M6....the 150 miles up to the Hostel at Limavady (about 20 miles from the circuit) was however WET or maybe even WETTER...still, a great Hostel, good welcome, a drying room, and hot shower and was off to the pub for lunch and talking bo77ocks all afternoon... Saturday....against all expectations dawned bright and dry....so an early start to get a good viewpoint.....first class road racing (you all know that the Irish style of road racing has to be seen to be believed....sensational, scary, breathtaking.....(usually) death defying.....and free to watch)....unfortunately the last 2 races were abandoned due to the weather closing in, and a very wet circuit....one of these races was the feature race...the Northwest 200 superbikes.....a great shame for fans and organisers.
Back to the pub for more talking bo77ocks more beer and food...then back to the hostel to pack up for the early morning dash to the ferry....If it was WET on the up....it was WETTEST on the way down!....but made it to the ferry in time for the 1.30 sailing...about 3pm an announcement was made....'would the owners of bike registration numbers.....bla blah blah...come to the information desk immediately' bluddy hell! that was #4's number (and my mates beemer, amongst others).....red faces all round when we met the First Officer...' very sorry lads.....your bikes have fallen ove....and there's been some damage' ........we were then led below to witness the carnage..... my mates beemer had topled onto #4, which in turn had toppled onto a sweet looking kawasaki outfit.....ye gods.....at first glance I figured I wasn't going anywhere soon on #4, with half a ton of bmw on it, and the kwackers chair looked like it had my righthand clipon buried in it.....once the bikes were stood up and lashed down (properly this time) damage assessment began....#4 was rideable (just...phew) badly bent levers but usable, r/h footrest same, rear exhaust mounting bracket fractured, indicators broken front and rear, worst of all, a dent in the petrol tank...god knows how i'm going to get that fixed......all this was written up on official looking paper, and signed by the First Officer....who admitted full liability....and all the details on contacting their insurers....just what I needed.......now for the 300 mile slog home....yup....WET WET WET,  (well until I got to birmingham).....all the time clenching my bum in anticipation of the exhaust falling off, can't understand why it didn't....the whole system was only attached to the bike by the 2 flanges and 4 bolts in the head.....but the old girl got me home without missing a beat....all the more sad as this was to be my last ride prior to the auction ending on Ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150345485978 ) and it was going well too....now I've had to put up a message to explain why I can't sell it until i get this bluddy mess sorted out with the insurers.....not the best of weekends

Sorry to hear that, Steve.

I had a much luckier weekend, only marred by my SRX-400 stopping on the M6 in the pouring rain and me getting soaked through.  Soon got her going again though - just a wet plug lead.  That was a relief, as I'd had visions of being stuck there for hours waiting for recovery.

70 miles in pouring rain's not a lot of fun, but at least I tested out the wet weather gear before Scotland next weekend.  Rayven "100% waterproof" trousers AREN'T.  And Oxford "Bone dry" boots AREN'T either!  >:(  Great!

On the positive side, won a raffle prize and a rosette at the Nabs Head show.  ;D

In desparation I looked for a good set of 'spats', I used to have some but could,'t find any....had to resort to the 'bin liner and gaffer tape' solution....works well, you just look like  a bag lady.
Sidi overtrousers and top were magic, no leakage atall, buffalo 2 finger mitts were perfect too, i did reproof them last week to be sure...if only i could get over the misty visor problem I'd be fairly sorted for wet weather

Sorry to hear about the Ferry problems, that's crap luck  :(

Boots = Altberg  ;) even swmbo was impressed when they made the uppers to suit for not a lot extra and on wading through a ford she kept dry feet  :)

yeah....the guy i travelled with had altbergs.....with the calfs made xtra large to suit him.....stayed dry over the whole weekend despite constant drenching rain and spray.....not cheap, but then £160 ish for that sort of quality is a good deal i guess

If you can get them off the shelf then they're not too bad pricewise, and you'll congratulate yourself every time you see another biker squelch past miserable with cold wet feet....

I'm sure there are other options, I just name Altberg because mine and swmbo's have been good  :)

Another alternative could be to get goretex socks, or sealskinz if your boots have the space?

Funny enough, guess what the postie brought me today?  Only my birthday present (from me to me) of a pair of Altberg Hoggs:

My birthday was in March, but they do have a bit of a lead time on production.  First impressions, without being anywhere near the bike yet, excellent build quality, snug & comfy without being too heavy.  As for the price - how much are those squeaky Sidi power ranger, leak like a sieve boots again?

I can't say enough about my Daytona Roadstar boots... but then they did cost over £200  :o

I'm on my second pair. I had years out of the first pair, including a couple of years of wearing them every day. I'd had them re-soled once (and a new Goretex lining fitted) but when I asked for this to be done a second time, some years later, the new importer said they now longer offered the service, but would I like a new pair for £140? Oh yes please!

I took advantage of the offer to buy a pair of boots one size up. I'd bought the first pair when wearing summer socks and of course it meant that they were snug when I wore heavy socks on winter rides. This is how I learnt, the hard way, that for winter warmth your bike kit should be a slightly loose fit.

Now I have the perfect pair of bike boots, imho.

As for the weekend. Pleasant family day Saturday, listened to some of the North West on Ulster radio (thanks to cable telly with all the radio channels). It was a very moving hearing William Dunlop descending into tears after winning his race as he talked about his two family members who weren't there to see it.

Saturday evening we farmed out the kids and went to a 'lounge' bar up the road for beer, margheritas and scoff with another couple. We were all done by 11.00 so then I cycled the two miles to where my ex-wife was having her 40th birthday party. My daughter was pleased to see me (my reason for going) and I spent a pleasant few hours drinking all the beer until I wobbled off around 3.30. And it's been a while since I came home that late.

Sunday was, as you'd expect, a bit of a washout due to an unexplained headache. I watched the GP through bleary eyes before my kids were returned by my harrassed-looking mother. In the afternoon Simon Morgan, Sarah and Sioned called in and we had a natter over coffee. I managed to limp down the pub in the evening for a restorative.

Steve - sorry to hear about the bike damage, bummer.

Using daytonas for 2 1/2 years and 35000 miles still not leaking but the soles are nearly shot. bought them on ebay  almost new. best pair of boots I've ever had.
The Altbergs are also good plus they do a good repair service which is very cheap. Have known a club member send his back for a resole and they came back with loads of other work and replacemnet parts as they were a bit worn, in their opinion. Cost of this service £40. :)
We all get Heavier as we get Older because there is a lot more information in our heads

Mine need to visit the factory as well as they extra leather in the gearchange area has worn through after perhaps 30,000 miles.
