insisted that the footings be taken out to 6' + to be safe, thus undermining the house footings by about 7'.

In best Monty Python voice "you were bloody lucky!".

We had a shi**y single storey, with no planning allowed for extra floors, extension built on the rear of our 1908 house that is supported on fifteen 12 metre piles. Beating your frankly pi** poor excuse for footings by a mere thirty bl**dy feet. Talk about planning gone mad. The original footings of the house were exposed in places and they were only a few feet thick, made of old bike frames and rubble. Still its only money, and if the Ruskis start getting frisky again we can always shelter under the sodding thing!

Tonight will be spent in a local public house in the company of bikers.

Do hope one wore ones best originals ,Bro .

See, I'm showing my ignorance. I was referring to people who ride motorcycles and not a lifestyle thing. Also I have no idea what 'originals' are. I'm guessing it's some form of 'biker' clothing. My early biking reads were PB and Classic Bike, not BSH and Easyriders so I have little to no knowledge of the ways of the pewter-tankard-at-rallies brigade.

So go on then, what are 'originals'?

Ahhh iirc you're going way back past BSH et all to the early days of "Outlaw" gangs where your "originals" were the original knackered oily stinking jeans you first had when you joined the gang, never washed, never replaced, just patched as needed and steadily more horrible as time passed. Sort of worse they are longer you've been in and therefore more credible you are?
From the same sort of people who insisted that a friend remove his Pony Express company leather jacket in a pub because the name was in the form of rockers on the back and if he hadn't removed it some of the more volatile "club" members were going to hospitalise him (at best) for wearing rockers other than the resident gang  :o ::)
I take it you've had explained the quaint customs surrounding rockers on the back of jackets?... lol

'Louse' is indeed one of the fellas I was drinking with. As it happens he was proudly showing off the new pair of 'boot-cut' Levis 517s that a friend of his had picked up in the States for him. Aparently 'real' jeans are getting hard to find in the UK.

As for originals, now it's been explained I do remember hearing tales about nasty, smelly jeans that were near-as-dammit waterproof through years of oil-staining and the like. All too rufty-tufty for me.

In my world (a strange world it is too) there's no better biking kit then dark blue Levis with turn-ups, black leather boots and a black leather jacket.

The first TC logo was in a diamond outline and some TCers said we should talk to The Chopper Club first.
Their slogan was 'ride with the diamond':

Of course they got all sniffy about it and said it would be 'better' if we chose a different shape, hence the circle we use now. A year or so later I bumped into their ex-president, a chap local to me, and told him the story. He replied, "What a sad bunch of twats, you should have ignored them"  :)

I wasn't aware it was a lifestyle thing,as opposed to those who ride motorcycles. I'm happy to be refered to as a 'biker'.It's what I am .If one wants to lend a perception of respectability to our activities then one could always refer to oneself as a 'motorcycle enthusiast'.That's the trouble with anything from religion to how one eats ones Mars bar, there are many different camps. It doesn't matter what we call ourselves,or for that matter what other people call us ,the common denominator is that we ride bikes .Simple as that. Our whole way of doing things is a choice of  lifestyle, made by us.That,to a greater or lesser degree,is what sets us apart.
I've had originals in the past , I still have my tankard and I'm still happy to ride in jeans and combat boots with matt black open face lid, goggles and an old leather.

Rocker , Greaser , Biker ,Motorcycle enthusiat ,Petrolhead ,whatever .

As with many things, it's not the way we choose to do things, it's the minority of people who believe that their way is the only way. For those who don't take it too seriously it's not a problem :)

Exactly. And it gets worse when the tribal thing kicks in and someone decides they can be a ******* because the other guy has the wrong badge or uniform.

I'm ok with the "Rugby" attitude where you have a laugh about someone's choices, but the "Football" version where people do silly things is beyond me. They seem to have it worse in America, the way it reads they even go mad inside their own clubs with the old members having the "noobs" doing goodness knows what.

Are we getting into this in the TC? Stuff the patches and jeans, everyone has to whip out their camping stove and the one with the most brass to least soot has to buy the round  ;D

Weekend debrief wise I'm doing ok. I've ridden the bike everyday since Sunday and it passed the MOT this morning  :D

The Bonneville. Only one of the three that could be got into an MOT-able condition without a few weeks to spare I'm afraid.
