Dragon Rally film

Just hopped onto GC's Dragon site and viewed the film shot by the late Roy Dudgon ,late 1960's .Graham thinks its circa 1969 . Its superb and really gives an insight into sixties motorcycling , for those of us not fortunate to experience it first hand .If you have a look at this ,make sure you watch ' European Capers ' by the same chap .It's also superb .The R69 { ? } and Steib pass storming is pretty good as is the loading of the bikes into ,I think , a Bristol Freighter aeroplane for the trip tp the continent .
Happy days ,I'm sure .
Enjoy .

I took a stab at the date because the guy who posted it wasn't sure either. However, there is one Euro outfit in the film that is also in a set of photos I was sent, definitely dating from '69. Of course the same bike probably came a few years in a row so this was hardly conclusive proof. Thanks for your comments Bruce, it rules out one date at least.

But what a fantastic film eh?

Cheers

Yes I did get the details... I'm still wondering how to get the mini-trip accepted by swmbo.

As for the Dragon film, if anyone would like to view it, it's in the '1969' section of my website:

I am amazed at how many people model themselves on Jethro - clearly a fashion cult figure  8) and role model for many.

Talking of fashion ,I couldn't help but notice on said Dragon film , the number of motorcyclists in seaboot socks and white silk scarves .Now I know GC has a leaning to the Rocker era ,as do I .For me the classic garb has to be open face helmut and goggles , white silk scarf ,leather jacket and jeans with tall boots and seaboot socks .

However ,what was really the day to day kit of the sixties ?

Would our more senior members care to advise us ?

Open face lid, Lewis Leathers Black Prince PVC suit, towelling neckerchief, Dunlop Safety Wellies with the 'fins' up the front and steel toe caps (beloved by trials riders of the time). Alternatively, black waxed cotton two piece of some description or anything from the Lewis Leathers range.

Alternatively, if impoverished, ordinary clothes with maybe second hand GPO telegram boy gear or exMOD kit from Pride & Clarke.

My gear was exGPO and trials wellies with plenty of layers beneath if required. A 1 piece tank suit/flying suit was also good, until the kapoc (spelling?) soaked up the water!! ???

Some modern stuff is no better! ???

G'night, Bill.

Too right. The tank suit, home knitting, army surplus and horse riding coat are now my favourites. Two winters and I'm yet to have the sort of uncomfortable ride I used to have dressed head to foot in Hein Gerickes most overpriced kit.

If I was back on the solo I'd be looking at means to put armour in a waxed jacket before going near any bike shop.

I suppose that you could wear something like those MX armour things underneath a waxed jacket. My memories of cold leaky Belstaff jackets aren't good tho'.
I have had my Bering jacket for years now.It is heavy nylon/cordura/something,no goretex in site,it works perfectly well, unlike my HG jacket that leaks.
