Panther factory demolished
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:09:35 PM »
I was browsing the bike magazines in W H Smiths the other day and Classic Bike was reporting that the remains of the Panther Factory in Cleckheaton has been demolished to make way for a supermarket.....shame.  :(

its amazing how little local councils and government seem to care about out heritage.

brooklands has a large Tesco's on it!

do you think the yanks would let a supermarket build over the harley factory? (no matter how much you'd prefer a Wallmart!)

IMHO it's only a shame if there any possibility of putting back into use makeing something. The Panther factory had no future and at least the supermarket will create a few jobs until probably the next recession when the supermarket market will be swamped.

When I was part of the automotive industry I had Albion in Glasgow as a customer. At one stage (1950's) they made a whole truck from bar and billet in a series of sheds along the Clyde plus engines, gearboxes and so on for other people (Enfield included). The modern axle production and stores use one bay out of eight and the workforce is down to a couple of hundred. To be honest they'd have a more secure future if they moved to an industrial unit in Paisley and sold the old factory for flats. Investors don't like Victorian sheds with leaking rooves and huge derelict spaces, they like industrial units with white painted floors and lots of visible activity.

I think eventually they might build a supermarket on the Harley factory. They've already turned the original into a museum I believe and at some point the existing factory will be either too small, in the wrong country (unlikely) or too big.

I hope they put something up to mark the Panther site though. They can at least call it Panther Road or something.

When the naming of the road(s) is taking place, the names should be submitted to the local councillors for approval. This prevents namings like Hitler Avenue etc by disgruntled developers who have had a hard time at the development control committee and been made to pay large S106 monies in compensation for their abomination.

If any of you live near that development, find the councillors and press upon them the road naming suggestions.

i know a man with a 650 panther, and to be honest i'm quite impressed by its turn of speed.

it seems to spend ages in each gear as the revs slowly rise, yet it accelerates briskly. the acceleration seems to be exactly the same down a steep hill as up!

 sounds brilliant too!

Is it true that the Panther kickstarter was Britian's first attempt to put a man in orbit?  ::)

Hmmm the place where I bought the Skorp has a Panther 350 trials bike on display. I looks like new and has post Vintage plates. The shop was originally the Perth distributor for Panther and was known as "Pal and Panther"
