I used to have a Garmin satnav and although a bit clumsy, one good thing you could do was trace your route on a large map on the PC and copy it to the Garmin. Well I bought a TomTom GO520 and although its light and works well trying to load a route to the itinerary is almost impossible. I had a moan at the TomTom people and although they don't have a set up like garmin they told me of this smart program called TYRE   http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/download/  This uses Google maps or Google earth. you plan the route with waypoints and let it trace the route and with this you can send your route to others and use some that are already stored on the program.

Hope this is of use to some and maybe we can share rideouts

Hi, Kurt, it really is the only way to get an itinary route into your TomTom - Go or Rider2, it takes all the fiddle of the native interface away and allows you to test the route before you get on the road. Be aware that on an itinary route you HAVE to pass through all intermediate points en route, missing them out sends you back to start at the last passed through point, bloody annoying to say the least. To re-start you have to stop and mark all points prior to your next as "passed through" then the device will continue happily and quietly. It took me some time to get to devise route mark positions that were almost certain to be passed through so ensuring it all happens as you thought. When it does for the first time, you really feel as though you have acheived something!!

Cheers,

John

Ive been toying with the idea of a SatNav but the limited planning on the screen has been putting me off, this looks like it might be useful. Cheers

Hi all,

It is probably worth pointing out that Jan produces this software himself and gives it away because he was fed up with the potch of building routes via the TomTom interface. He relies entirely on donations to fund his work, please make a donation if you find his stuff useful, I did at the beginning and found that each new release got more friendly and useful, it is now very good.

Cheers,

john
