Cadwell Park fun!
« on: July 26, 2008, 01:04:31 AM »
 ;D

Myself, Simon & his sister Kalyna all had a great day at the Moto Morini track day at cadwell Park yesterday (Thurs).

Simon took his Triumph TT (because I broke the clutch on his Rotax racing single the day before)
I took my Yam TZR/Xt640 race bike
& we built a bike out of the spare parts supply for Kalyna to ride (std SRX608) trimmed for the track with tzr forks & brakes, a single f/glass race seat, an old tz 350 top half fairing & some home made pipes, a couple of decent tyres & that's it!

We put my old 620cc race engine in it at first, but it wouldn't fire up, despite fuel getting through properly & a good spark????  we ran it again & again but not a hint of firing up ???
 (any suggestions????)
So at the last minute on Wed. we fitted an unknown bog std.608cc engine that has been sitting in my garage corner for a couple of years, fitted the twin 34mm open race dellorto's, crossed fingers & started her up, & blow me! it fired up FIRST kick on the temp. kickstart (as It was in my shed & late eve at the time), although we only ran it for a couple of mins it seemed to run Ok (wow!), THEN! I remembered that I hadn't put any oil in it, so remedied that & prayed it hadn't damaged anything!

Loaded all up & left for Cadwell early Thurs morn.

A perfect weather day!  got out on the track for a few sighting laps, (Simon on his Trumpet, & me on the SRX  Kalyna was to ride - to test it out), although it ran, the carbs were well out but I found that if you treated it harshly it went ok (suprisingly well in fact) but not easy to ride, so I let Kalyna ride my race bike ( a known quantity) & I rode the std SRX for the day.

It was Simon's first time at Cadwell & Kalyna's first time on a race bike/Track/Cadwell, so when they came in after a couple of sessions they were both grinning from ear to ear!

And so the day went, until the late sessions when my race bike came in with another crack in the exhaust & a bit of a nasty squeal from somewhere in the engine area? so I decided it wasn't going out any more. The last session was starting (Morini's /intermediate/fast) so I told Kalyna to go out on the std. SRX & have fun but take it easy, & to come straight off the track when her session finishes down to the holding area where I would take it out for my own last session.
The session only lasted a few mins when it was red flagged due to a couple of seperate incidents at Park corner & the Gooseneck. So I waited & waited for my bike to turn up, then found out that the Park corner incident involved Kalyna. She turned up in the holding area a while later (with no injuries) holding what was left of my exhaust. So, day over, & apart from a few broken bits on the SRX, no problems. Simon enjoyed himself learning the track that we will be on with the Supermono's in a few weeks time, Kalyna having her first taste of track action & escaping unscathed, & myself having a great time on a std. engined machine that was put together more or less in a day & lapped as quick as my race machine (when I last rode it at Cadwell)?????

SO, if things go well, we might have another rider joining the Supermono ranks next season, as well as my son John, who has just returned from USA & already got the itches to get out on track again after helping us out all day!

We need a bigger truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spark fuel and would not run...

Compression down?

Spark 180° or 360° out?

Plug working OK at atm pressure but breaking down in the head?

Yeh! that was my guess, compression? as the motor has not been touched for around 12 years & was starting to smoke a bit when it last ran (oct 07)
Also when trying to start it (2nd gear & push the bike back until the piston locks & then on to the starting rollers) it woudn't lock fully & just kept turning?

So, methinks I might have to get my hands dirty?

Ahhhh - sounds like a lack of compression there too....

squirt some oil down the plug 'ole, will provide a temporary compression seal (unless it's a knackered valve seat or sticky valve) probably enough of a seal to allow it to fire up , and once going it will clear it's throat and be ok probably

Aye OMEGAMAN,

Sally often feels as though she has no compression if left for a week or two. A few strokes of the kickstart to circulate the oil and you can feel the compression coming back. Start and warm up steady and the compression is back all tickety boo. Sticky rings? Redex down the plug 'ole and some quality 2/ in the tank at 50:1 petrol:oil should help. As SteveL says

and I wouldn't wish that upon you.

My regards, Bill.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody.  If it was going to free up, wouldn't it have done so by being run at high speed on the rollers for quite a while, even though it didn't try to fire, the engine was quite warm when we stopped.
Anyway, I've decided to strip it down as it hasn't been touched, as I said, for 12 years, so I think I got my money's worth out of it? & the spare std. engine went so well at Cadwell. (what carbs would be suitable to bodge onto it???? for racing)
Will keep you all posted on the inspection of internals!
