XBR speedo drive - does anyone know..

Does anyone know if the speedo drive used on the XBR is model specific or if the same unit is used on other models   ???

Mine has packed up but there is a CBR600 unit on Ebay which looks identical but I don't know if the internal gearing is the same?  .....any ideas?

XBR has an 18" wheel and the CBR a 17" wheel,so I think the internal gearing will be different.
Have a look for another Honda with an 18" wheel.
But having said that the rolling diameter might be the same !

I'd be tempted to try the CBR unit for now. It might well be the same and at the very least it will certainly be close. Even if it's not exact, then stickers for the new 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph positions are easy to apply until you can get an XBR unit.

Can anyone see a manufacturer making lots of different geared speedo drives? I'd have thought the magic was at the speedo end. Oh bugger, sorry, forgot I was talking about Honda then  ::)

say the word and i'll measure the total diameter of the front wheel and tyre on my cbr600.

the item in the picture looks identical to the one on my cbr and the one on the cb500 i used to have.

Right, I've been doing some research! using a rolling radius calculator on the net I've calculated the following:

            Wheel/tyre size                Static Radius                  Rolling Circumference   

XBR =  18" wheel X 100/90 tyre          299 mm                      1943 mm

CBR =   17" wheel X 120/70*              291mm                       1903 mm

           (*can you confirm this Bullet 350?) 

So rolling circumference difference of 40mm which equates to 2.5 KPH at 100KPH

Therefore sod all difference!!!!

So I'll be buying the CBR600 unit until an XBR one turns up (missed one on Saturday ...GRRRR)

I'll let you all know if it works for future reference

the cbr has a 120/60-17, but to my eye it still measures about 291mm.

however i'd be very surprised if the speedo drives were geared differently, i can't recall seeing any id numbers on them.

it would make sense to do the 'correction' for the wheel size with the clocks, which are different on different models, and just make one speedo drive.

I've had a XBR speedo drive apart and there wasn't any gearing in there at all other that that required to convert 'spinning wheel' into 'spinning cable'.

All I can tell you, officially, is that the XBR drive fits only the XBR500 and the CMX450, the actual drive gear inside (which is the bit that drives from the front wheel) is specific to these models too. If a part is interchangeable Honda tend to interchange it, there are always exceptions as they're no more infallible than the rest of us. I've never tried swapping speedo drives as I've never needed to but to be honest if I was in your position I'd be looking out for a second hand part and hoping for the best. With patience these things usually turn up eventually (not so good if you have to rely on one bike for everything I know) I can only wish you luck. The tab that drives from the front wheel is common to many models, so finding one that will drive from your wheel ought not to be too hard, just finding one that will fit in and 'sit' properly might be harder then you just have to hope the ratios are right. The drive in my RS is the same as the drive in a 250/400T/N. The RS had 18 inch wheels, the N's etc 19" so you see it has little to with the wheel size as such. I can't remember if workshop manuals list speedo drive ratios or not, might be worth checking out though if you find something of another model that looks like it would fit. Sorry, can't say any more than that.

Tried the CBR600 speedo drive.....Doesn't fit ....Bugger!  >:

Still, it was a bit of a risk.  The design is identical ...but slightly bigger all around...the centre boss is bigger as is the axle size so its back to the drawing board.


.....anyone got a spare XBR speedo drive or want to buy one for a CBR600?

Might I suggest a digital 'Sigma' or similar speedo, average speed, mileometer, trip distance, average speed thingy? :)

Ducati singles destroy Smiths and Veglia speedos, the drives stop driving or the phosphor bronze drive strips or seizes and then strips in the front brake plate. >:(

Solution was to fit a Sigma digital, on a flexible piece of trials number plate on the top yoke, zip tie the signal wire to the brake cable and attach the signal sender and magnet to the fork slider and a spoke. Measure the circumference of the tyre and programme according to the instructions supplied. Job Done ;D

Nine months later the vibes destroyed the digital display. >:( Packed the display only in it's box and returned to Sigma in Germany with receipt. A new display and battery by return with compliments and no further problems for two years. ;D

Was £25-00 from M&P at the time. More sophisticated Chinese jobs, without wiring, for up to 199KPH now available on Fleabay ~£15-00 :)

Take your pick unless original whirling gears, cables and magnets are essential. ??? Must gain a horsepower from losing all that friction!!! ;)
