Weekend debrief - GRAND SLAM!!!
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:55:43 PM »
I worked on Saturday up until 2.00, then I returned home as I was expecting the arrival of fellow TC member, Simon Morgan. After a spot of lunch and a good watch of the Scotland-Italy game we headed off to a freind's house for a good seesion watching a marvellous rugby game, eating pizza and drinking beer.

Seeing Ray Gravell's daughters come on to the pitch with the team was very emotional, their father was a very popular player and broadcaster and his early death this year was a shock.

After the delight of watching the Welsh victory we came back to Castle Carrick where Mrs Onepot had arranged a curry evening with some neighbours. Simon and I were well on our way to being drunk, but we soldiered on for another four hours or so  ;)

Simon departed late Sunday morning and then I went back to work for the afternoon. Sadly that seems to be the lot for my weekend, no drinks tonight unfortunately. I was hoping for a day off tomorrow, but my customer has asked me to go in, so I'll just think of the money and get on with it.

The other downside to all this work is that I haven't had time to replace the outfit's chain and sprockets. The chain that's on there is dragging on the ground and I'm not sure there's any adjustment left  :o

Cheers
GC

Departed Lampeter on Friday a little after noon for Oxford, on the Skorpion. Now last week I had attempted to fit a set of Gilles clipons 41mm (very tasty - now for sale). Anyway, they  fitted but the clutch cable no longer did, so it was a bit of a rush to get the Paolis back on and as my luck would have it they weren't quite right. So it was an iffy and uncomfortable ride of 150/60 miles via the A40. I stayed at the YHA next to the railway station (very swish for a hostel) they even let me park the Skorpion in the back garden. Next morning up with the sparrows, dropped my luggage off at Central Backpackers (Highly recommended), leaving the bike chained to a fence in one of the public carparks (free in council carparks in Oxford, so long as you're not in any car's way). Then a stroll up to Trinity College on Broad street for a Colloquium on Heidegger and contemporary religious thought. I was invited to the dinner, at my expense, but by that stage I had had quite enough of philosophy. So it was back to CBP. After chowing down on my ration pack supplies, a group of us Aussies sat and watched seemingly endless repeats of MASH on tele whilst ripping the proverbial piss out of Poms, Europeans and of course the Americans. It was a hoot to be be back with people who shared a decent sense of humour. This morning I was out of Oxford by 08.00 but the conditions were appauling, and what with one very near head on with some pillock who thought he didn't need to worry about oncoming bikes when overtaking six cars, it was quite stressful until I crossed the border and swept up into the beacons again when the wind dropped and clouds broke a little and things started to look up. Home at last; a warm fire and delights of family life. Oh and someone told me that Wales are Grand Slam winners - nothing new there then!

On Saturday had an enjoyable but frustrating time working on Andy Duncan's bike. Beginning to think that the seventeen years of abuse the frame has had, mated to a very similar but not quite the same motor, is not the simple job we first thought it would be. The main weapons of choice this weekend were the soft faced mallet and an angle grinder. I think we had hoped to get the whole bike together, and I think we got about 80% of the way there; with much measuring and checking being the order of the day. But there is still much to do and the liklyhood of making it in time for the first round at Snetterton is not good - but we live in hope!

Whilst all this was going on I managed to catch the Wales-France match on a 5inch TV. Was actually more like listening to it on the radio as the picture quality was so bad. Excellent result though! Stayed over in London at Andy's and had a curry. Came home in the cr*p weather this morning - so glad I wasn't on the bike.

Watched the F1 Grand Prix and found it quite entertaining. Without the traction conrol its not so much like watching big Scaletrix!

Friday spent digging soil pits and wandering across bog awfull gleys pondering what to grow in it. Finished at 19:00 with a head torch, good craic with a young keen forester, never thought you might look at the soil afore planting anything!!!!!!!!!! :-X

Home for a shower, followed by bangers, onion gravy, tatties and brocilli all washed down by a pint of Badger! Tasty!

Indolent Saturday after chopping some wood, spent lounging in front of the stove watching 'gentlemen' knock lumps out of each other.
Scotland :-[, Italy ;D.
England ??? to many Adonis' lumbering about, Ireland  :( definitely tiome for a change, O' Gara losing the plot again by the look of it.
Wales  ;D apart from the slapper shots, like to watch the rugby, not what the gelled hair catches in the nightclubs of Cardiff after, France  ??? did they turn up?

Sunday, hedge cutting, lifting Jerusalem fartichokes, digging the tatty patch, watching **08 plated motorcycles hare past the house, litter picking from the verge, watching my neighbours bees taking nectar from crocus' and my box which are in full flower. Large plate of cornbeef hash and mushy peas with a Greene King IPA, tasty, gale force gusting storm force later immenent! :-[

Was Grandprix ever any better than Scalectrix? Shows the true quality of the puppets in the cockpits :-X

Toodle pip, Bill.

My Uncle has just completed a validictory portrait of Ray Gravell for the Welsh RFU, I saw it 90% complete and it was marvelous.

Hopefully should be hanging soon in memory of the great man.

Bloody marvelous weekend for all us Welshmen, even us expats no longer living in God's country  ;D

I saw the BBC Wales programme on Ray Gravell a few weeks ago, I'm not a great rugby fan but I found it quite moving.

Spent a mild fortune kitting out my boys in Bike clobber, but was all worth it on Sunday when I took them out (one at a time) for a jolly. They loved it! Oldest said "It's like flying on the ground" ;D
