Weekend debrief
« on: February 17, 2008, 09:43:08 PM »
On Friday Simon Morgan and I met up at a small country pub in Nailsea for a night of banter with our mutual chum Tim Berry.

I'd phoned the landlord the night before and said "Do you remember I camped in your beer garden last December?"
"Yes"
"Can I do it again tomorrow?"
"Yes"
End of call. He's a scary bloke.

Anyway we had a very pleasant evening of banter and drink and sometime after 12.00 Simon and I retired to our respective Bivvi bags.

Now, due to the demands of Mrs Onepot, I had to be home in Cardiff by 8.15 at the latest. On my venerable sidecar outfit this presented a challenge. Consequently my alarm rang at 6.15 and within a couple of minutes we were up and about. It was cowing cold. We both fumbled around for our kit and I set to making coffee on my thankfully easy-to-use Svea123 Stove. At one point Simon was messing about with my drybag and I said. "Si, that's my bag" to which he replied, "Oh, I didn't think I'd packed this stuff. Then he started looking for his bag.
"It's under the sidecar, remember?" I told him.
He continued looking in the chair
"It's under the sidecar... under the sidecar... under... underneath... it's underneath the sidecar"
I can't blame him, I was equally as befuddled by the cold and the fact that the stars were still out.
I wondered aloud, "How the f*** do they cope on the South Col?" (the last camp before the Everest summit from whence climbers have to depart at midnight for the summit push).
"Yes" he said "and we haven't even got the excuse of oxygen deprivation".

We were on the road by 7.00 and within 5 miles or so had parted company as I headed for the bridge and he aimed east for Reading. By the Severn crossing toll booths I was in agony with my hands and I had to stop just before the booths. My fingers had become really cold and then, for the first time ever, wiggling my fingers had brought the blood back into them. Which would have been fine, but the blood coming back was more painful, by far, than the cold fingers in the first place. The sun crept over the horizon as I waved my arms around and massaged my digits back to warmth. The low sun illuminated numerous toll booth attendants laughing at my antics.

A short time later I was back at home, before the alloted time to the amazement of my wife.

Half an hour later as I drove her to work I said "Do you know, I got up at 6.00 this morning, shook the ice off my bivvi bag, made coffee with my gloves on, risked frostbite on the way back and provided some free entertainment to all the toll attendants on the Severn Crossing"
"so" she said.
"Well" I replied, "it's just that even with all that I'm still in a better mood than you, you grumpy bugger"

She hit me then.

Saturday was a kids day and then we went out for supper at a neighbour's house (and heard a blinding joke that can't be done justice here due to the requirement to perform a hand movement to make it work).

Sunday started with my first lay-in for weeks and then a sleepy day spent reading and drinking tea.

Not a bad weekend

Friday, mot'd outfit, went to work, came home and had a couple of beers then collapsed into bed. Missed out on a free night in the pub 'cause I was too tired to drive the 30 miles to get there  :(

Saturday, tidied house did some paperwork and cleaned the worst of the mould/spiders and cobwebs (think the big one out of Lord of the rings) and general muck off the outfit. Sorted out radio kit for "portable" operation. Worked out I can get a genny, radio, power supply, antenna(s) mini-mast, table and chair into outfit  ;D

Sunday, decided clouds looked too threatening to play with expensive radios in the out of doors so rode outfit to my parents and had a dissapointing day of hearing a reasonable number of stations but not being able to contact them  :( reluctant to turn the power up for fear of upsetting their neighbours and didn't have the nerve to try CW (morse code) without a computer as there is a competition on and everyone seemed to be working at 30 word a minute upwards (way too fast for me to read by ear!).
Still, outfit behaving and looking presentable enough to be seen on... well as close to that as an XBR outfit ever gets I reckon(!) Not transport for the shy or retiring  :o with (a lot of) weight in the chair it pitches left front a bit alarmingly on right handers, but feels a bit less hairy on left handers. Will try moving the weight further back next and see how it is. (currently a small 2 stroke genny behind the seat and a bag of builders sand on the seat!). I reckon it could also do with slightly lower gearing for general running around, although it's not bad at 60mph on the M'way/dual carriageway  ???

Be warned, next time I meet anyone else with an outfit I'll be trying to blag shots for comparison purposes  ;D

With my parents now winging their way back to OZ, life is returning to normal.
Half term Friday meant outing with the family but I managed to tax the Skorpion in the week so Sat I got to take it down the shops. I was careful not to overshoot as the last time I took it out I was halfway to the coast before I came to my senses.

Spent PM cutting down sycamores in the back yard with no 1 son, hard yakka but we both enjoyed it. Evening spent watch V for vendetta with the redoubtable Mr Marshall of BMW fame.

Today Church in the AM followed by run to the coast in the Passat with family and toxic jack russell

Friday afternoon I got sweet FA done. Don't know where it went, but after checking in on my parents house (in Spain for months the lucky whatsits) the day just seemed to go. Anyway, Saturday I got shifting, cleaned house, got some ghoulash going, made potato soup (the thick German sort) and finally got into the garage to paint out some rust spots on the Bonneville and play with the electrics to run a second heated jacket. Sunday I was awake at 6 for some reason, so Gooner got two miles before breakfast. Our shower has been leaking so most of the rest of the day was lost to replacing that, replacing tiles etc. Got an hour in to work out security arrangements for taking the outfit to Amsterdam in March. Not much bike activity, but i'm ahead on everything else, so space will appear later  :)

Made the mistake of lifting my car bonnet, and found the diesel pump and engine covered in diesel. Bum.
Went in the garage to find three bikes all in various stages of undress. Bum.
Suspension together. Put the tank back on the Skorpion, turned the petrol on, petrol everywhere. Bum.
Pulled the carbs out (pain in the arse), grit in the float valve. Sorted !
Looked at the float bowl seal which had now expanded and would no longer fit Bum.
Ok I'll fix the oil leak, from the oil pipe. Would the 'o' ring come out, nope. Bum.
One empty oil tank and sleeves full of oil, the pipe is back in place, just need to buy some oil.
Still dont have a bike that works

SWMBO had decided that the area laughingly called the master bedroom needed redecorating.....I'd been dreading this announcement....it's the only room in the house that is papered (the reason for this is, that at 200 years old, the plaster in some rooms (mainly the horsehair/lime/cowshit variety)
is a bit iffy), and the bedroom was worse than the rest, so, it got papered. Now....the walpaper paste is structurally superior to the 200 yearold plaster, and attempts to remove paper (after scoring and soaking) resulted in large lumps of plaster coming away as well......so, plastered up the holes, and decided to treat the existing paper as lining paper and 'sized' it all on friday night. Interesting smell in the bedroom ...still made a change from my minging trainers.....saturday was cieling day....at some time in the past a 'textured' coat had been applied.....damaged last autumn by a leak in the loft...bits of this textured coating were bulging and a funny brown colour...ended up removing a quarter of the stuff! and the textured polycell i got don't match the original, so ended up doing the whole bluddy cieling, then emulsioned it all sunday morning....got all the paper up by sunday night (husband/wife walpapering is a great test of marriage stability...i find.......i managed to duck the paste brush, but the seam roller caught me behind the ear!) removed the carpet this morning, and have already completed the gloss painting.....ready now for new carpet tomorrow...so I thought....on taking up the old carpet noticed bad worm infestation in just one floorboard....funny rest seeem ok, so off the the woodyard for some timber and some treatment .....what i should have been doing is getting 2 track bikes ready for next sunday when #1 son and I are off to snetterton for a trackday

If that were true I would be divorced - I for one do not so wallpaper. If Mrs E wants DIY doing she vacated the house to avoid risk of injury.

Lynd had a shift on Saturday morning which resulted in me being awake at 6am. Got up, tip toed downstairs and made myself a cooked brekkie while she was out and the boys were still asleep. Rest of the morning spent reading and slurping tea/coffee until the boys got bored and needed amusing. So father and sons headed off to the woods for a bit of an explore and bonding session before winding our way to Borders book store for a mooch followed by large hot chocolates and muffins. Home in time to take wife (now back from work) to the local for a couple of ales while dinner simmered on the stove. Night spent with a bit more reading, but this time the tea/coffee was replaced with wine (hic!)
Sunday morning was dedicated to watching youngest son play rugby. A dedicated past time, not for the faint hearted, standing in a shaded Welsh valley trying to be encouraging. Went for a 2 hour run/hill walk in the afternoon before wandering aimlessly into the garage for a potch about. Had a bit of fun re-arranging things before getting on with an uptodate job list for Abigail (ooerr). Made a great big toad in the hole for tea and finished off the night gawping at the box with Mrs Squirrel and another couple of bottles of red ;D

Jen took the boys up to MK for the weekend so I got on with some tasks that have been waiting - feeling somewhat more energetic of late, hoping ME/CFS is on the wane!  Friday spent repairing arrows and fiddling on the lathe.  Sat spent making a box jig type thing to allow me to mass produce the 'leg' of hobby horses - I have been told I have to make at least 20 of the things! and paneling over the bottom of a glass door we have that is all little leaded lights and No2 (21 months) insists on slamming close by running at it - now nice looking panels to match the four panel doors that seem to breed in our kitchen.  Had a relax by shooting bow in the garden - broke all the arrows I had mended and then some.  Bugger!

Sunday was free of gymnastics, swimming, ballet so I got over to Margam to meet up with the rest of the archers, had a lovely couple of hours on a roving clout - never done one before - chatting and shooting at things - clumps of grass, tree stumps etc.  Managed to come back with all the arrows I had set out with - whoopie!

Jen and the boys back Sun pm - so back to family maintenance

Broke another arrow today - out of 12 shot, one broken - now down to three.....
