Dragon Location?
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:55:54 AM »
Instructions arrived today and the site is between three and one mile of Beddgelert on the Capel Curig road. My money is on the Copper mine although I don't remember them having camping. I also recall that the road is a bit tasty in places after the turn off for Blaenau Ffestiniog so that should be "fun" if things cool down to any extent.  :o

"hard standing for the bikes, on site toilets, food and beer".  I still think the Dragon has become too easy.

Whats wrong with a field, a trench and a big bonfire.

Bah, humbug.

The hard standing is there to give the wind space to build up sufficient speed, the food will harden arteries over night (but have the opposite effect on the intestines), the canned beer was transported from Manchester in a wheel barrow and the less said about the toilets the better  :P It's just a different sort of toughness that's required (unless it snows!) ;D

Don't take this as me volunteering to do anything , but, having heared various rumours about the pending demise of the Dragon (the hardstanding will be taken as further proof in some circles), is a TC "proper winter rally/meet" be worth having a think about? Would a Field/trench/bonfire rally have many takers?

A problem for a big ticketed rally for sure, but probably less so for an invitaion only, private function held on a commercial property.

I know of a couple of conference locations that run Out-of-bounds type team building things that allow groups to have fires and I've found a few campsites that have fire pits. I assume they take care of their guests legally. This is as far as my idea has got, so I don't know if such places will have much time for a bunch of strapped for cash bikers in January who are maybe going to bring an MZ powered air-raid siren. Given probably a fair bit of time I'm going to do more research, but was thinking of a "fancy a beer in X, bring your tent they have camping, it's £?? per night" type job. Obviously it'd be a different asmosphere to a Dragon/Elefant (no badge, no coaster, no soup, bring your own Whiskey) but the Germans seem to be doing these "micro" rallies too and they might perhaps fit what some people want to do?

I would agree with the two observations, H & S has gone mad but think about it when a thousand bikers get together and there is all of that fuel around it just takes one accident for things to go horribly wrong and the organisers of the current Dragon have to cover themselves. This situation similarly was considered for our annual rally to cover the club commitee who would ultimately be responsible.
I for one would be more than prepared to forego the Dragon and meet up somewhere different on a casual basis. But it needs someone to recce a site obviously with a pub not necessarily with access to a bonfire as sitting around a JIKO is for me the biz, having a beer with my mates, providing someone is prepard to keep me away from any deep water!
The main problem is that any of the National parks sites are closed, even Dent site is officially closed but he wouldn't turn anyone away, he has already had some campers at the end of last year!
So its down to local knowledge and someone prepared to organise it. Any takers, I for one will travel.

Have contacted this place:

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=3751&map=on

They seem biker friendly, but have never actually camped there; it was recommended by people who have though. Could make a change from the Royal Oak@Wetton or as a Winter, and I use this in a camp at your own risk sort of way, rally site. Maybe for March/April?

Andy mentioned an MZ-powered air raid siren. I'd forgotten all about that. It was at the 2004 Elefant. Basically some bloke had brought a proper bike siren that he ran via rollers spun by his MZ's rear wheel.

Bloody noisy thing it was... there was no sleep after 8.00am  ::)

Yes please to a TC winter informal shindig. Simon Morgan is (I think) at a German micro-rally as we speak (see 'mad bastard' post) so these thigns can be done.

Aye,

Simon's Austrian mini rally details say it all:

"Liability
This is a private meeting, and we assume no liability for whatsoever. Participation is at one's own risk. No drunk driving"

If this requires explanation..............! ::)

I'm contemplating things.

My regards, Bill.
