Ride in this morning.
« on: October 05, 2007, 09:09:41 AM »
On my way in this morning I was about to pull out when I spotted a single headlamp in my mirror. I held back and waited so they could pass. He came flying past on a Bandit, and then caught up with the line of traffic travelling at about 60mph. He sat for a while on the the first cars bumper two maybe three metres away, waiting long enough to annoy the car driver, then shot up the inside and then caught up with the next car and sat on their bumper.
To me there riding quickly and then theres riding stupidly. He was in the later category. He had no chance of stopping if the car drivers touched their brakes and by sitting on their tail he was signalling them to move over, which had they done so would have knocked him off when he went down the inside.
Is it just me ?

You do have to wonder which part of "Keep Left" these ****wits don't understand, but I also wonder how riding like a nutter helps.

We really really really need a proper highway patrol to sort all these idiots.

Its funny, a lot of people ride like that. It doesn't even get you where you're going very much more quickly than anybody else anyway. Its dangerous riding for the sake of it, they don't gain anything but the illusion that they're going faster than everybody else a little bit. It certainly doesn't gain them any respect, particularly from other bikers but it gives the impression to Chief Inspector Brunstrum and his pals that that's what we're all about.

anyone who gets flattened whilst going up the inside of traffic deserves all they get.

its understandable on two and three lane roads when Captain Muppet sits in the outside lane for no particular reason, but at any other time its stupid. even the most vigilant driver won't be looking for you there.

its these idiots that will get bikes legislated out of existence.

the worst part of all is that they will irritate a driver, and leave the scene. the next bike to come across this car will get all the aggrovation caused by the first bike.

Point of law worth knowing:

filtering is legal if the traffic is doing 12mph/20kph or less.

i'm not sure how this applies to filtering between two lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. anyone know?

I agree, I never filter if the traffic is doing more than 65ish +or- 20mph

The highway code says you should keep left. It also says that on a multi lane road when overtaking it is better to stay in the passing lane rather than keep pulling in when passing a group of slower vehicles. Finally it says that in heavy traffic where an overtaking lane slows, it is acceptable to keep moving by going through on the left. The only reference to filtering I can remember is a warning to car drivers to look out for bikes in slow traffic.

Breaking the highway code is the fast track to a dangerous/inconsiderate driving conviction, but which section they choose to pick up on is up the copper and the court. Your guy nipping in and shooting down the inside is heading for a telling off or worse. When (as happened to me last week), some tart is in lane 2 doing 60, lane 3 is moving at 90 and lane 1 is clear to the horizon and doing a steady 70, I'd say you'd be unlucky to get pulled and daft to try and get across 3 lanes to just meet the convention of only passing on the right.

I have the funny idea there is something "Roadcraft" about filtering, when and when not to do it - basically it says that the safest place in a slow moving or stationery queue (now have I got stopped or pencils?) is at the front.  I think it also suggests filtering at no more than circa 5 mph faster than the traffic and at no faster then 25 mph max.  Of course I could be makig it all up, and I am too tired to clamber over all the stair gates, toys etc to get to the book.

I thought that was the idea of a stair gate to stop you getting over it. Is rog a little younger and smaller than he claims? Does his mum have to open the gate for him to go out to play? Is he too tired because he needs his afternoon sleep?

just watched that clip, :o

as he overtook the silver car i thought it was too risky.

shame it was another bike comming the other way, not a 8 wheeled tipper or jcb.

i have no hesitation in saying i hope he died from that, he clearly doesn't give a toss about anyone elses life.

makes you feel for the bloke comming the other way.

Bet that left a mark!! What was the plonker doing? Why counter steer the wrong way once her was past that car? I have to say that it made me smile though....I hope it was just the shock and not some nasty streak. BTW I loved the tool box next to the crashed bike. Do you think he had it strapped on the back in case of a breakdown?

I saw that a couple of weeks ago on another forum. Apparently, both riders were killed in that crash. The police released the video as an example of how to ride like an idiot.
