The New XT660Z Tenere

I see the Tenere is coming back after a 10 year absence. 4 valve engine from MT-03, all new bike with 22 litre tank. Loads of bolt on goodies will be available; the bike will retail at £5000 and will be available from Spring 08.

Its looks just the bike I might be interested in. I will wait until the spring and give it a test ride and its £5000 cheaper than a new BMW GS 1200 and I bet it’s more reliable to.

Hi Steve,

Yes I have had some problems with the 1150 GS and if it was not for the extended warrantee I took out on the bike it would have cost me a packet. 

1: New gearbox
2: New throttle bodies
3: New clutch
4: New clutch slave cylinder
5: Oil seals various

But with all that said it’s still a great bike and to be fair the above have been in the last 33000 miles and the gearbox on the early 1150 were suspect anyway. From what I’ve read the new 1200 GS has had some problems as well, so I will not be upgrading to one of them. The big problem with the GS is the servicing costs an intermediate service will cost about £300 and a major is about £400 and this is getting ridiculous. I think this is why so many people like single cylinders they are cheap to service and maintain and that is why I’m thinking of the Yamaha it will do what it says on the can. And I will not have to re-mortgage every time it’s due for a service.

what, no new fork legs on your bmw?

you must have paid a bit extra for paint that stays on in the winter

everyone i know with a modern bmw has had problems, mean while the two old airhead bmw's i know continue to just run and run...

Hi bullet350,

It's not the fork legs on the GS that give trouble it's the fork brace that just disintergrate as soon as they see any signs of weather let alone water or salt. You are right, I have had the fork brace changed under warrentee and I forgot about that but this one seems to be okay honest.I know what you mean about old air heads they just keep going, you would think that BMW would have built the same reliability into the oilheads wouldn't you?

Interesting, I'd assummed they were quite reliable, I shall strike it from my list of 'Bikes I'd like if I could find the money'

If only I had 5 grand going spare  Still, call it 2 years to get into the second hand market and i've got until 2010 to raise 4K 

I hope Yamaha improved their exhaust, the XT600E one rotted in days.

BMW are definately trading on past glories. From 1999 to 2004 I was running an F650 in parallel to an R1100R. The Aprillia built F had none of the flaky paint and leaky seals that R or my previous one had built it. The only BMW I'd buy today would be a pre-92 airhead.

Hi Andy,

I'm inclind to agree with you about the Airheads they do seem to go on for ever. I suppose it's backed up by their second hand prices. Never mind their is always someone out their willing to pay £5000 for a good 1150 GS and then I can buy the Yamaha.
