Second time SRX400 owner
« on: February 17, 2022, 08:37:03 PM »
Hi all
Just saying a quick hello as an introduction.
I had my 1st srx400 about 25 years ago and loved it.
I always regretted selling it so when an unfinished project srx400 came up recently I grabbed it.
The engine is running fine but the rest of it needs attention.
I have the forks being rechromed which gives me a chance to do frame derusting and general tidying.
It's an 1989 3HU1 model I believe.
It's original tank is unrepairable and it currently has a ybr tank on which works great but looks crap.
I thought I'd be able to pick up a tank for it relatively easy.
Boy, was I wrong  :D
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the challenge
of getting it back to as original as possible.

Welcome on board MT01 torque. I’m more of an XBR man so can’t really give much advice on the Yam front. However there’s a few chaps on here that are srx experts and I’m sure they will introduce themselves in good time. Best of luck with the rebuild 🤞👍
Cheers, Michael

welcome back to the srx fold. lots of stuff on here that you'll find useful. there are people on here that can ferret out info with amazing speed and  accuracy ... no names no pack drill (but the name Bill might crop up ;-) ) there are others who own srx's who have probably, between them resolved most of the problems you'll come across ..... so get the questions coming ....
how bad is the original tank?  i have seen on the fakebook SRX600 group a guy doing an amazing job of cutting and welding.
bear in mind that there is a huge amount of commonality between the 600 & 400 srx's.
a look at SteveH's (he who runs this club web site, gawd bless him) https://www.srx600.net/ loads of good info there.
good luck with the refurb... photo's and progress reports are always welcome here.

Hello MT01Torque, welcome to the fold. I'm sure you will be able to get the majority of any problems sorted on here. I do believe that the MK1,2 fuel tanks are still available from Yamaha at an eye watering  :o price tho. Failing that you could always look in the Japanese Yahoo website that I have personally used many times as has Bill (The Moudie).

https://www.jauce.com/auction/1037234480

A tank won't be cheap wherever you go but what is now.
Another source that I have used before is D&K Spares NR Stoke on Trent. Give them a call, you may be surprised . 01782 861 100

Hope this helps
Ian

PS just looked on Fowler's website and tanks are no longer available but last price was over £600

Aye MT01Torque,

Welcome to the "madhouse"!  ;)

I purchased a 1991 Monoshock, with a rough tank. No leaks, but repaired with rough TIG weld/resin putty and daubed with paint that then bubbled!

After lots of deliberation the tank was sent to Hartlepool Radiator Co. for repair, having been re-assured that they knew what they were doing, given a reasonable turnaround time of 2-3 weeks, after being quoted a firm price. The use of 'Fuel Tank Renu' sealant to line the tank with and an "invisible repair" as the base of the tank would be removed and then re-welded once the welding repairs had been made. The tank would be finished in primer ready to receive a finishing coating.

Long story, the tank was returned after over 10 weeks, after telephone calls and emails and no firm price given. The top of the tank having been cut open to gain access and not the bottom, as advertised. Welding and filler had changed the shape of the tank so that it no longer straddled the frame and located on the front retaining rubbers. The primer/filler was a "blow job" and the packaging within a 3mm cardboard carton was some old bubble wrap, a 'T' shirt, part of a copy of an old newspaper, crisp bags and a 'Wagon Wheel" wrapper, just to add insult to injury. Needless to say that the tank had broken through the carton and had suffered further damage, the seams at the rear being bent at 90° to the vertical and the petrol tap mounting threads were blocked with sealant!  >:( >:( >:(

The company owner had apparently been away on holiday and left "instructions" to repair and despatch. Apologised for shoddy packing after I sent images, refused to refund work payment, but finally agreed to refund P&P. Cost me over £300 and still required re-finishing, priming, paint and lacquering in addition.  ::)

All in all, a bad experience! The Renu tank liner appears to be of good quality and has been used with both E5 and E10, along with Castrol ValveMaster/Fuel stabiliser added at 1:1,000 (10ml:10litres), without octane booster, with no apparent ill effects after 3½ years use.

A good tank from Japan (via Jauce) might seem expensive, it will probably cost at least 3 times the final bid price, once carriage and import duties have been paid, but may prove a good purchase, if it avoids the scenario that I was involved in.

Hope you are able to enjoy the beastie this summer.

Good health, Bill

Thanks very much for the welcome.
I haven't figured out how to multi quote so I'll throw a mix of replies in here.

Yeah I've seen SteveH's site. Really informative and useful, thanks.

Yes I reckon the original tank is shot.
It's full of holes and paper thin.
There probable isn't even a square inch of sound metal.

I did ring those dismantlers D&K spares you suggested, no luck.
They suggested promoto salvage, also no luck.
Thanks for the pointers though.

I'm already researching the Japanese proxy sites route.
I've contacted one site who will allow me to bid but can not ship internationally
as its a prohibited item. But they will allow me to forward it onto any address in Japan who will
put it into a container for sea shipping for me.
I've no idea how to organize this though.
Does anybody have experience of shipping parts through groupage in a container?

Another site I've contacted will ship direct from their warehouse for 84000yen.
Serious money but from reading stories about bodged repairs maybe it might
be worth bearing.

Anyway I did run the bike for a few months before I dismantled the front end
and I really enjoyed it. There's something about wringing the throttle off a single
without doing ridiculous speeds that puts a smile on your face.
I've an XT600 as well which does a similar job of getting thrashed everywhere seem equally fun.

Thanks for the tips from those who replied and as soon as i can i'll start a new thread on the rebuild.

Hello again. I actually found a company that will purchase on your behalf from Yahoo Japan and similar sites. They bought and imported a low mileage (12000 km /7000miles) SRX engine complete off Yahoo and it was delivered to my house on a pallet. Total cost was £640, but it did take 6 months as I bought it at the very beginning of UK lockdown I can't see a fuel tank costing that much?
Anyway his details are as below. He replied reasonably quickly whenever I had reason to email. You will have to pay upfront but if you use a credit card or PayPal then there is a bit of security. I had no problems with them at all

Morning, have you thought of possibly getting a new tank made out of aluminium? I know this wouldn’t be a cheap option but it’ll last a lifetime plus shed a bit of weight (no bad thing on a small 400) Or possibly a aluminium fuel cell covered over by a fibreglass copy of the srx tank. Just a thought 🤷???
Cheers, Michael

I've registered with them and will be keeping an eye open.
I've still to figure out all the combined shipping charges.

I did think briefly of getting on
e fabricated from sheet metal.
I wouldn't like to think of the cost though.
Your second thought of a tank inside the original has got me thinking.
Perhaps I could use my original tank upper skinsomehow, with the "real" tank behind it.
Realisticly though, that's probably not going to happen.  :D

MK1,2 fuel tanks

I didn't realise there was a difference in tanks.
What's the difference between mK1 and 2?
Can either be fitted to any srx400 or srx600 ?
