Me and my mate had a wander around the local bike shop today as it was open again. We are both of a similar vintage and we agreed that other than a nice Sportster 883 Iron there was absolutely noting in there that remotely attracted us. Bah humbug.

As you say though the RE looks lovely and 'proper'.

They are a great value modern bike in the classic tradition with lots of scope to mod/improve or customise.I saw this vid last week and am quite tempted to consider the big bore kit in the future-although I have no idea of the costs. The basic package is pretty sound though.

The standard 865 S&S kit is £659, but that is just the basic kit that will need to be professionally fitted to your factory barrel. You’d probably be looking at around £400 in labour to get a good machinist to bore and press-fit it.

If you want the ready to go kit (including a new barrel) it’s £1740 (inc vat)

Then you have various options in terms of cams, clutches and fuel controllers.

The cam in this bike is by Hitchcocks and costs £205

The pre-configured Power Commander costs £387

The performance clutch kit is £398

The free flow headers are £354 and the end cans are £358

The total cost of everything will depend on how much you fit yourself, and what supporting parts you go for. It’s probably a whole video just to talk about the options here."

Not cheap, but even with the full upgrades still the same price or less than a lot of similar stuff and so much nicer.

Ouch-well that's way beyond my budget unless I came into some £s.I know these things aren't cheap to do and its probably money well spent but I guess I'm just too tight when I could have another bike or two or three for the money!

thats alot of money  but these kits dont come cheap ,i think the 650 has good power for what type of a bike it is ,tommy

It's alot of money to spend - I think for most folk a different set of pipes and a change of filter would be plenty. To be honest, the one I test rode a few years back sounded nice even with the standard pipes. Similar but different to my W650 if that makes sense. High performance bikes are wasted on me! Lol.
I noticed if you went for the big bore kit (450cc-ish) from Hitchcocks for the Himalayan and added all the bits they recommend you're up towards £2000.

I must admit, I do like the twin and the performance kit is not too badly priced for what you get

The thing is : it does offer you many options.

The basic bike is excellent value-with on faults IMHO.

Then if you want to modify you can take it a stage at a time to spread the cost if you want to.
