RE Clipper/Bullet
« on: March 25, 2021, 08:48:28 PM »
I have been offered a really nice Royal Enfield, it`s a 1957 Clipper 350 with a well sorted 500 bullet motor. Historic status.  To look at it you would think it was a 90`s model, If I wanted it I would have to sell my newly acquired Italian 150... I think it is either overpriced or underpriced for what it is , or indeed what it isn`t. So I am busy pondering, asking price is £2300  there may be some movement, as yet I haven`t asked, what do you all think ?     One of the main things putting me off is the fact that I already have an RE..

Well if your other RE is an EFI model and the Clipper has the old style 500 Bullet motor -I've had both and they are like chalk and cheese so I'd have no worries on that score.

£2300 sounds like a good price if it's as good as it sounds. If it was a Norton it's be 3 times that (but of course would be a far nicer bike.....) 1950s Enfields are cheaper than other British bikes as they're "devalued" in many people's eyes by the Indian models.

As said, completely different to the modern Enfields.

Odd isn't it that Enfield have been devalued by association with an Indian firm but Triumph who have had many incarnations (Les Harris, workers coop, made in Thailand etc) haven't. I know it is probably totally different but I can't help wondering why.

Anyway Rufus when funds allow I work on the maxim of 'see it, like it, buy it'. Works for me.

Well I won`t be getting it, shame as I was quite keen, my hoped for sale of my Vespa was to have provided the funds but I ended up doing a part exchange deal. It is a 1957 350 Clipper with a fairly recent 500 Bullet motor with a lot of new parts, the seller has all the info, if anyone is interested pm me and I can pass on his number. He wants £2300 and didn`t seem keen on dropping the price as he isn`t overly bothered about selling it, or so he said, but he also said his bad knee was making it difficult to start. So might be worth a bid.

I think it's because the Indian Enfields were identical to the Redditch bikes whereas the modern Triumphs (leaving out the Les Harris etc) are just totally different bikes masquerading as old ones.
