DOH!
« on: April 30, 2007, 04:56:51 PM »
Ever have a good idea that had one fatal flaw that made it not quite as good as you thought....?

I needed a Chain and sproket set, so after a look around I bought an OE one as the price was (surprisingly) pretty similar to aftermarket.
Today I realised that my chain is *REALLY* goosed, bad vibration and a rythmic clack/clunk indicating a proper nasty tight spot.
Ho hum, better get around to fitting the new one then....

So I nipped into the garage to check if it had a split link (as a temp until I nip past the local bike shop to get the soft link riveted).... except.... hmmmmmmmmm
Don't see a spare link in the package... looks like its already on... maybe they attached the split link for transport..?

No, *DOH!!* endless chain (insert expletives of choice!)

So I'll have a nice solid very safe chain, but, I'm going to have to take the bl**dy swingarm off in order to change a drivechain :o :(

Ahh well, I'd nothing better to do anyway apart from work, taking swmbo out, going to dive club, part time work, building the guides altar fires, fixing the Honda, fixing the Suzuki, fixing the other Honda etc etc etc..... :(

I fitted an OE chain to my XBR a few years ago and I have to say it did last very well indeed. Miles better than EK, etc.

My triple S chain, on the other hand, is a bag of shite :)

Cheers

Never mind smudge it only took me 18mths to complete the same job. Once you have stripped and cleaned and then re-powder coated and replaced all the bearings and put it all back together again you won't know yourself.

Wouldnt it be easier just to buy a rivet link and grind off the pins off a link and knock it out???
I run a rivet linked endless drivechain on my turbo, and Ive never had any issues with it, and it does *NOT* have a nice easy life...

Yeah I would normally use a rivetted link chain, it was accidental buying the endless one, hence the "DOH"!

I could grind off a link, buy a split link, ride it to the shop and have a rivet link fitted (still cheaper than buying a decent link riveter and I dont trust "just hammering it over"), but by the time I've done all that I might as well just do the job properly :(
After all, although its a pain in the a**e it's still basically an enduro bike with different wheels so I don't have any of the access issues of something like my old ninja!!

Lets just hope it all comes apart cleanly :o (if not I have a wide and varied selection of "persuaders" lol)

Are you sure there isn't a loose link? There's usually an unrivetted link; you take it apart, thread the chain, put it back together and rivet it. To rivet, get a child and tell it to hold something heavy behind the loose link, then peen over the ends with a light hammer, doing each a little bit at a time. I like to start by centrepunching each rivet. If the child is allowed to get greasy, it will be happy and won't complain.

Child slavery eh! Greasy fingers!

Don't tell my wife, it's a partnership thing and the weeun moved out a wee while ago into her own place. So Kat now gets asked to 'assist'!

I just use split links, as the rivet job is a right 'Horlicks' of a carry on. Agree with the centre dink first then lightly peen with a half pound ball pein against a 4lb mash if you are going to use the rivet link.

Bye, Bill

Chain and sprockets now fitted... and they better last a long time because it is an absolute swine of a job! :o
(ask me over a beer and I'll explain why, once the knuckles have healed lol)

Also discovered one of my suspension bushes has a little play in it, ho hum :( at least it's small enough to ignore till (well) after payday and all the others are fine!
