MZ Skorpion 660 carbs and end can advice
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:33:44 PM »
Hi,

I have purchased an MZ Skorpion Sport 660 and I am looking to do a little work to make it a little more responsive, look and sound better.

I am looking at an Akrapovic or similar end can but wanted to know if anybody knew of a link pipe I could use. I don't want to chop the standard one as I will keep it with the STD end can in case I sell at a future date. It also looks like if I just put another end can on the STD link pipe it would point away from the bike at a jaunty angle.

I'm also considering buying Mikuni TM34-B65  to fit and wondered if they gave good results or whether I would be better off with a carb kit? I have been recommended to run foam air filters rather than k&N with them for better results. I'm guessing the STD air box won't fit on with the Mikuni carb.

Any advice on other work i should look at carrying out is appreciated

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place

Thanks

Justin

Aye justin,

Welcome to the forum of a diverse mob whom enjoy playing with things that go 'Thump' in the night and a whole host of peculiar tastes!

Owned a Skorpion Tour for a while, but couldn't get the hang of the gearing, bit buzzy!  ::)  However, several other members have tweaked carbies and pipes and posted it on here. No doubt they may be along soon to give you chapter and verse and something about camping gear, weather presenters and LandRovers! ::)

Just enter 'Skorpion' into the 'Search' box on the top right of the Thumper Club page screen and I think you'll have plenty of reading material for a few hours.  ;)

Good health.

My regards, Bill.

I run a tour and I have fitted a louder can  (RENEGADE) which might make a bit of difference, with DB killer, take it out and its about as responsive as an old Brit single.

You want to run standard on the front sprocket but 43 maybe slightly smalller on the rear. The 39 is complete crap and makes the gearing impossible to please. You will lose a little off the top but there isn't that much there anyway.

As to changing the carbs - often tempted but to be frank a lot of a pain in the arse. Go to MZriders.com and look at postings from Bill Jurgensen, he is a bit of a character  but is into all that sort of thing.

hi Stefan,

Thank you for the response, what link pipe did you use for the renegade end can?

I have had a list of items I can buy from tunebike.de that I am mulling over

carbkit, lighter flywheel and a box to raise the rev limit all of which seemed a good price though I have been advised by others I may lose out of the corner grunt if I go for a lighter fly wheel.

I have always wanted an MZ since they were launched back in the 90s and I am not disappointed. I love it's small size and flickability and I am quite happy with responsiveness as if I had wanted a flying machine I would have bought a 1000cc pocket rocket.

The end can is going to be for looks and I am hoping to find a link pipe that will work with an Akrapovic.

If I can get a little extra acceleration out of it for a modest spend I will be happy. I don't need anymore at the top end as I need my licence.

Mate,
Renegade did the can and the link pipe and as I recall it wasn't horrendous.
here is the approved list of mods
Brakes, change both for Brembos (off a Mito for the front) - I changed the caliper on the front and MC on the rear - brilliant.
if you want more go then change the wheels but then you have to dick about with spacers and you lose the speedo (crap it may be but it works) TZR250 but don't ask which one.
Light starter wheel??? Might do this myself one day..maybe.
Progressives up front and make sure the rear isn't shagged worth doing, well i did.
I run 130/80 which is roughly the same as the OE recommendation of 150/60?? on the rear and that seems to work nicely.
Also I run the dogbones off the replica which raises her tail slightly and put more weight on the front.

I don't know where abouts you are but PM me and we can arrange a chat if you like.

Hi,

I use a renegade can, with (I think) the supplied link pipe.  Mine is chopped down from a hi level link pipe, but that may be custom, as it was on the bike (trackbike) when I got it. Not compatable with the standard subframe (with pillion pegs) so I chopped it down and fitted a standard subframe.

Now I've gone back to a single seat, I should refit the chopped subframe and hi level pipe, but then I'd need a new link pipe!!

I have WP fork springs, 15w oil, and 160mm air chamber.  Forks are still pretty crap, but maybe a bit better than stock.

I still have the crap Bilstein rear shock.  Hagon for me when that one goes I would think.

Also I run the dogbones off the replica which raises her tail slightly and put more weight on the front.

Interesting Steff, I will get them when the shock needs changing.  (May have them already, but not sure...)

My carbs have a dynojet kit fitted.  Also, I use pod filters, and junked the airbox.  Hi Compression piston, but its standard size.  Minor fettle of the head by slipstream.

If you are looking for good reliable advice in the UK, slipstream tuning probably know more than anyone.  They have developed the motor very well, and for most applications.  Not all wallets tho!!

Cheers for now, let us know what you do,

a

Hi Justin, there is a company that does the down pipes as slightly bigger bore in stainless and a link up in the north east called projection components.
www.projection-components.co.uk/ They may just supply you with a link pipe if you request it. By the way what area are you in?

Hey Eric,
they look nice, but at that price I will await Santa's arrival. Do they make much difference really?

Hi steff I've a brand new set to go on mine which I've had a while and just never got round to fitting it yet so I can't say what improvement to expect. It is although a very neatly made exhaust.
Projection components did actually use my bike to build their prototype system which is is what they now sell.

Hi eric

Thanks for the link. They are worth an email to check out prices though the full system looks a little pricey when you add on the price of an akrapovic or yoshimura. I think if i needed a new exhaust through necessity it would be an option but not just for looks.

My local garage in eastbourne is checking out local options for a bespoke link pipe and will try an r6 link pipe for me. His last resort is chopping a zx9r link pipe but it looks heavy and the choice of end cans are a little less sleek than i really wanted. Whatever the final solution is i will post. Let me know how you get on with you exhaust system.

Thanks

Justin
