So, I dragged the Bullit out of the shed over two weeks since I went to the Dragon to give it a wash. Oh dear, a lot of alloy fur, and some rusty red. Sorry, pattina :-\
-
Yes, this one :)
-
today i took my `trail` gn along a few gentle byways, nothing too taxing as i was on my own and didn`t want to get stuck in a bog with no help, still need to get the exhaust up out of the way..

Love that pic, Spooky, nice one!
-
Yea Rufus. Fantastic photo for the start of Spring :)
-
+1 great piccie, nice looking mosheen....
-
When I see piccies like that I just want to be there, love the gn by the way.
I had a long, snowy ride through the Peak District on Tuesday then Wednesday I waited for the RAC to recover me on the way home from work as the rear wheel bearing on my F650 has collapsed. Luckily it gave me a warning shimmy so I could pull over safely.
So today I will be stripping the wheel in readiness for the new bearings I have ordered from Motorworks. I'm going to do the front ones too as they are as old as the rear and have done as many miles [70000ish] so it seems like a sensible precaution.

Insured the XBR today with MCE for £100 - comprehensive, breakdown, helmet & leathers, protected no claims (8 years), compulsory excess only £50. I looked into Peter James, but their agreed valuation form required an independent valuation - eh?! Anyway, I left it all far too late as usual.
Great idea to do a new version of this thread each year, Timbo 8)
-
Same here Matt. just insured my new ktm390 thro Carole Nash (aviva) cost was slightly more than I'd expected but aviva were brilliant when I had my accident so decided to stick with them, cos hey one never knows just what's round the corner (literally in my case😬😬) ........roll on spring/summer I say.
-
First outing on the KTM in spring? Will it be a quiet affair, or will you be posting? Always willing to post photos ( hint, hint) as you know 8)
-
today`s byway was a bit muddy, after this it got really bad and as i was on my own i turned back, remember this is on a fairly standard gn250 , must be bonkers

I must be some kind of pervert cos I looked at that photo and thought I'd love to be there. I haven't done any greenlining since the late 80s but have been thinking about it more and more recently.
I love your gn cos it's real, no 6 foot seat height, no acres of plastic and an air cooled thumper, perfect. I keep looking at my f650 and wondering how much plastic I could throw away and how much weight I could save.

That slub looks familiar , good on you for giving it a go , would recommend some knobblier tyres though if your going to play in the slub . Have to say a light bike makes more sense in those conditions as much as I like my tenere the weight and high centre make it hard work in those conditions . Ps where is that?
Cheers Mark

Lovely picture, reminds me of February Fill Dyke in Birmingham art gallery:
(http://www.bmagic.org.uk/_includes/phpThumb/phpThumb.php?src=/imagelibrary/Fine%20Art%2FPaintings%20and%20Sculpt%2F1914%20P308.jpg&w=700&h=700&hash=1237481268&hash=25780b399ab029dec4f3ca16498d250b)
I must say my least favourite going when I was pre-65 trialling was mud like that. Give me a rocky climb like Hollinsclough any day.

the front tyre is a 21" trials pattern, the rear is a bridgestone trail wing, the only decent option for going off road as it still has the 16" wheel, maybe i can get an 18" in the future, The byway is near Sedgefield , north east

Yes me too prop, bin a long 18months I gotta say. Yes Matt, I'll be in touch with a photo or two for you to pop up for me. Don't think I've been as excited about on two wheels since I was 16 years old, can't wait 🏍🏍

Called with Rossco500 yesterday, and before we'd even got through a mug of tea, we'd pulled the Burman B52 gearbox out of our jointly owned Matchless. The play in the output shaft had eaten the centre out of the inner radius of the clutch basket. The clutch is fixed, but what I want to know is.....is it a big job to strip a Burman gearbox? anyone any tips or tricks? or is it best avoided and left to a professional?

NASA have just released some software that will help you with this Timbo. See Matt's other thread 'One for Andy M?' ;)

Burmans (Burmen?) are pretty straightforward beasts. I'm sure I've seen a youtube recently.
Yes:
and
I think I've also seen a pdf somewhere recently.

This morning i got the HD/Aermacchi from the back of the garage where it has been since oct, it started straight away and as roads seemed ok i took it on a 70 mile round trip to the Station Cafe at Crawleyside/stanhope moor, coffee/sausage sandwich/belgian bun.... if i hadn`t had a doc`s appointment after lunch i would have gone further, why would i want to sell this bike ?....

FINALLY...... after 18months out of the saddle ( longest lay off by far in 37years) I went out on my first post accident ride, picked up a nice little ktm390 duke last Saturday and wanted to wait until weather was decent and the wife n kids were out just so they weren't worrying. It was ACE if a tad surreal. Roll on summer I say🤘🤘🏍🏍
Cheers Michael

good to hear your out and about again, i like the look of those little dukes, though 390 is hardly little..

Whey hey, great news! ;D

Broke down.........
I've had a couple of very pleasant runs on the Sunbeam this week to check all is OK for (hopefully) a new owner (hint: it's still available). All went well and without incident.
So I thought I'd exercise the Honda 400 Super Four I bought in the Autumn but hadn't yet ridden. At first. all was fine and I was really enjoying it - very smooth, ample power for me but one or two ergonomic things to sort out - when it expired about 8 miles from home. I thought it might have run out of petrol but no - plenty left in the tank. It would restart after being left for a while with the petrol tap on but would expire with a cough shortly afterwards.
Of course, with the Sunbeam I have enough tools to completely strip it by the roadside but foolishly omitted to take any on the Honda. So managed to get the bike into a layby*. Of course when I got my phone out to call the rescue people its battery was flat.....
Fortunately I was just over the road from the Rose & Crown whose staff kindly let me use their phone, look up the breakdown service on their computer, charged my mobile up, and gave me a nice cup of coffee FoC.
All that remained was to wait an hour and a half to be rescued (despite the driver only being called out 40 minutes after I rang) before being brought home in a nice cosy van.
I haven't yet checked the breakdown cause but suspect either the tank breather or blocked petrol tap filter. We'll see.
*Many thanks to the unknown rider of a lovely Amaranth red Triumph pre-unit who drew up beside me and blocked off traffic while I pushed to the layby off the busy A435. If you read this, I must buy you a pint sometime!
-
Are you sure all this isn't just an elaborate excuse to nip into the Rose and Crown for a couple of pints and a curry Ian? ;D ;D ;D

Great to read this! What's the KTM like to ride?
-
Delighted for you Michael and commiserations Ian.
I understand that the Duke 390 is a "very nice" wee bike through the twiddlies, but I have not had the opportunity to give one a shotty myself.
All the best to you both.
My regards, Bill
-
Yes, likewise. Really pleased to hear you're back on the road Michael :) And hopefully its something simple Ian. Both reasons sound very plausible.
-
Thanks fellas, yes it sure felt good😀... Bill the bike is a little corker if a tad to quiet at the mo, however that is being taken care of 😜... spins up to 60mph in a breath, clearly it's no 1050 speed triple but you can't even begin to compare to an XBR. Worlds apart, although the ktm doesn't av the "character" that my cafe racer had. Still good to be "back in the saddle" again..... I can feel an areosmith track coming on 🤘🤘
Cheers, Michael
-
Great to hear of your successful return to the road-long may it continue Michael ;D
-
Aye Michael,
My friend removed all the sticky graphics, bought a comfy seat, tail tidy and an Akrapovic, along with some sticky tyres and was delighted using it on the IoM. ;)
Have a very happy and long future in the saddle, whatever the 'beastie' is. ;D
Good health.
My regards, Bill
-
Again thanks to all that av passed on their words of encouragement for my return to the saddle.
Cheers all. Michael
-
Today i took my hd 350 clutch plates out then put them back in , test it tomorrow...........
-
I finally took delivery of my new fancy smancy titanium zorst and tail tidy for my ktm390.... managed (with some help from others) to get it all fitted and running last night. The bike actually sounds like a eerrrr a BIKE now and it (for a modern bike) does look quite tasty. I'll send some photos to Matt when I get a min and hopefully he will pop them up ere.... cheers, Michael
-
Aye Michael,
I suspect we'll no be seeing any images for a wee while as you'll be exploring horizons! ;)
Good health.
My regards, Bill
-
Thanks Bill, as soon as the weather picks up I'll be out searching as many horizons as possible. Cheers, Michael
-
Weather this wknd looks well good everywhere, so let's all have some fun :)
I spent part of today giving the Falcone yet another spruce up, for yet another tyre kicker to come and kick its tyres :(
-
Still no sniffs yet Tim, thought this would have gone no problem ??? I see it on DD.ie GLWTS
-
Maybe you'll atta wait and take it back to Stafford in September.... probably get more genuinely interested folk looking at it there Tim. I like Steve am surprised it hasn't sold. Chin up mate n best o luck... cheers, Michael

I don't think bikes are moving much at all at the moment. My Sunbeam is still awaiting a new owner despite lots of early "interest" that fades away, and most of the bikes I've looked at as possible replacements fail to sell.
Maybe once the sun comes out......

Yes, I think the market is very quiet at the moment until Easter probably, when all the buyers start to think about new bikes and all the sellers think they can make some extra money because of the higher demand.
-
Out for a leisurely run on the Guzzi this afternoon, to look at some bikes an elderly gent has for sale, including the MZ Silver Star. Will report back this evening ;)
-
That sounds like fun.
I will be fitting a 2nd hand top box I got off ebay for £15. Then today and tomorrow I will be out on my bike enjoying Derbyshire lanes, tea stops and bacon rolls. I love Spring.

Went for a ride to the REOC jumble near Daventry on the Super Four and broke down (again!). But managed to restart. It cuts out when idling. I've taken everything to bits that I can think of and upped the tickover to the specified 1.300 (it was under 1,000 which can't have helped). Plugs clean, nice colour & properly gapped.
Leaving it to idle on the drive till warm it seemed fine if a little lumpy but the proof will be in the jam tart.
So I never got to the jumble which is a shame as I was looking forward to it.
-
I gave the ss-350 a bit of a clean, took tin side covers off and gave them a coat of matt black to freshen them up, then went to see an acquaintance who was working on his 1955 NSU Supermax, what a lovely motorcycle, i only went for a quick ride /visit but ended up doing about 40 miles just enjoying the sound of an open pipe single !!
-
I had a great spin on the Falcone with Rossco500 on his W650 to visit a guy who is selling all his bikes. Guzzi Lario 650, Guzzi SP750 Italian police bike, Cagiva Gran Canyon, Ducati 906 Paso, Ducati Monster750, MZ Scorpion Traveller, Norton Navigator, RE Crusader, BMW F800ST, Norton Jubilee project, Jawa 350 project. And finally an MZ Silver Star, which I would be mad not to buy ;)
We then visited another fella with a mind blowing aray of stuff including a dozen LE Velocettes, and nine Douglases, not to mention all the military deactivated weapons :)
-
Hi Tim. I`m guessing you`re going for the Silver Star? If not let me know. What price was on the Skorpion Traveller? Cheers, Steve.
-
Yes, I'm hoping to buy the Silver Star. He wanted to do a deal were I took the Scorpion Traveller as well. On its own he wants £1000 for it, but it is really rough condition. A real shocker! It would need a complete overhaul. Even at the £500 I could have had it for with the Silver Star, I'm not taking it :-\
-
No worries, not for me then. If you change your mind on the Silver Star (doubt it) give us a shout. Cheers, Steve
-
Been to my 1st camping weekend of the year with the Mayflower MCC. Excellent ride, beer and company ;D
-
A wee canter on Sally from Perthshire down through Fife over the Forth Bridge, with the new Queensferry crossing looking very bonnie and the crane on the north tower dismantled. Out through the west side of the Pentlands via Balerno, Carlops, down to Broughton and then west on the Beef Tub road down into Moffat for afternoon tea. Then back over via the Grey Mare's Tail and St Mary's Loch to the Crawford Arms and out over the top to Innerliethen for a fried fish; before returning via Peebles, the Bush Estate, Edinburgh and the Forth Bridge. Two hundred and thirty miles and the sunset coming home over the bridge was a real cracker. ;D Deserted roads south of Edinburgh! ;D ;D ;D
Good health to you all.
My regards, Bill
-
Now that sounds like a great spin out Bill. Our club Scottish wknd this year is over May 26th wknd, based in Gretna of all places. Wouldn't be my preferred choice, but I guess well have a good run out around the Borders ;)
And Pete, the weather for your Mayflower Rally was ace, if, perhaps, a little chilly in the wee small hours. If I got a wknd like this for the Shepherds Rest, I'll be well chuffed :)
-
Just worked out what this thread means-quick on the uptake and getting even quicker with advancing age i am-
Spent most of my weekend stripping and re-building the corroded swing arm on my new XBR see- related post in the problems thread.........

Got the XBR out from it's winter hibernation today ( yes I'm a wimp!) , fresh petrol, charged battery and she started straight away! ;D ;D ;D.....then it started pi55ing down with rain so I'll have to wait til tomorrow to take it for a run! >:(
Hoping to fit a one way crankcase breather soon.

New shocks arrived today. Not had a chance to try them out, but look the biz. Lovely alloy and rebuild able for £100 from this guy in the NE;

Nice one ... looking good Matt!! 8)
-
Definitely the latest in XBR fashion :)
-
Erm! 8) Not in my 'umble opinion! But then I'm feeling a bit bolshy and one man's meat is another man's poison, so if you like 'em and they work for you, crack on! ;)
My regards, Bill

They seem to find there way onto a lot of Triumph Bonnevilles these days,One caution I would add is on the Triumphs they have an extension piece to add if you want longer shocks.....these have been known to fail on the Bonnies.. :( I will continue to use Hagons :)
-
Thanks for the heads-up. I haven't fitted the 30mm extension pieces. Even though the XBR is lighter than the Bonnie, a failure of this piece due to design makes me concerned about the rest of it. I read plenty of positive reviews with these covering decent mileages, but will keep a close eye on them :)
Just been out on a short run and am pleased as punch with the improved feel. I was impressed with the handling before, now it really is, "on rails". Here's a fuller pic, showing how well they match the comstars.

Nice mosheen, I love the ducati'esque trellis frame...
-
In our local parlance, that bike "looks the absolute tool", as in the dogs dangly bits :)
I'm sure you are going to have a good summer ahead ;)
Cool T-shirt, it nearly fits him already Michael.
-
One of the bikes I'm looking to sell is my Enfield, so I thought id better tidy it up, having used it over the winter. It has definitely got a bit scruffy! So I started with the front wheel, where the alloy hub was not looking good, and the rim appeared to have some rust. As my mate was replacing his rims, I thought id replace mine with one of the rims he was discarding. The one on the left in the pic is the one he was discarding, the one on the right is the mess I discovered when I removed my front tyre :-\
Then this evening I went to collect my latest purchase, which I plan to use as a replacement for the Falcone, Enfield, and XBR, which I'm selling. Pics to follow tomorrow ;)

I love the pipe. If it sounds even half as good as it looks. Does it come with a get out of jail free card? ;D

Afternoon chaps..first off thanks to Matt for posting the pic of my (very) shiny new bike with my son behind it. Just got back from my second outing on said mosheen, absolutely love it, done approximately 300 miles on it now, cracking little bike. In answer to your question Matt, yes mate it does sound as good as it looks. Mega throaty n raspy indeed, plus it's mega lightweight, unfortunately it doesn't come with the get out of jail free card, although I have ridden past about 4 parked up police cars now and non of them av pulled me in over it. I think because it doesn't have the pitch of a four cylinder bike it doesn't seem quite as offensive. I would recommend the 390 to anyone, cracking bike.
Cheers, Michael

Took a ride out to Jim Aim KTM today,Had a gander at the 125 KTM as they didn't have the new 390 in stock,Apparently the 125 and 390 are identical apart from the motor.....talk about compact and light,The only thing that put me off was the headlight (this has changed on the 2017 model).........but it turned out they had a demonstrator the same as Michaels with 1100 miles on the clock for £900 less than the new one,He was very keen to send me out on it (he has one himself),I left with the intention of going back next week for a test ride....hope the weather holds.....cant believe it has 44 bhp....awesome 8)
-
What a cracking day it has been.. 8) my Brother and I took a ride down to the Ace Cafe for the BSA day (on our Triumphs :-[ ) To say it was busy was an understatement,Some very nice bikes to gawp at....the one that made me go .. :o was a pristine Goldstar,The fella jumped on it as I said to my brother, He must know that bike inside out...he's done his jacket up put his lid and goggles on and pulled on his gloves..how many kicks do you recon to start it,Reached under the carb for a bit then grabbed the handlebars and .......whiiiir....thump thump thump...it had a bl**dy electric start 8) 8) 8)
-
Put the Honda back to original spec ready for the H-P arriving on Thursday.
I also put some boards down, left over laminate flooring on left over chipboard, so I can use my bike mover seeing as it has a centre stand. I now have a very small dance floor in the garage. Possibly needs a glitter ball or something to complete the effect?

Went out on the ktm390 along with big bro (propellor) and a good mate of ours, mainly Yorkshire dales. Helmsley, Masham, hawes, kettlewell... then back home. Now done 460 miles on the ktm, wot an absolutely cracking little bike it is, the more I ride it the more I like it. Not a typical "thumper" tho, has to be revved. Even more so than say an xbr500. Getting used to it now tho, great to be back in the saddle and getting out again.... happy daze😁🤘🏍
Cheers, Michael

Fantastic weather here yesterday so i headed off for our first official club run of the year. The Mad Dog Run. So the MZ SS had a baptism of fire for its first run in my ownership, 280 very enjoyable miles, as the start, and finish, is from the Mad Dog clubhouse in Lisnaskea, some 90 miles from home. Well impressed with the wee beastie, a gem of a bike :)
Then, this afternoon i had the Falcone out on the local Egg Run. Over 400 bikes, and £2500 raised for Marie Curie :)

Sounds like a fair day.
I went to the Nottingham egg run yesterday morning which was great. Over 900 bikes and 3000 eggs collected for local children.
In the afternoon I went for a ride around some lovely Nottinghamshire lanes and avoided all of the traffic that a sunny Sunday brings out. And I got a bacon butty without queueing!

Bought this on Tuesday:

Not a thumper I know but hopefully I can still hang out here with the big boys......
-
Lovely little Arrow Ian, or is it a Golden Arrow? Health to use, and keep us all posted on your exploits. There's still loads of these knocking about in sheds over here ;)
-
It is a standard Arrow, but has obviously been repainted at some time in the past. I actually prefer that pale shade of gold to the "proper" Arrow SS colour - it's more subtle and looks quite regency.
-
Lovely :)

Very nice, I'm not a lover of two strokes but even so it's welcome as far as I'm concerned, most anything with two wheels and an engine is and always has been. Maybe a little more these days as it's bikes like these that pay my bills and put petrol in my tank.
-
Yes, I believe Draganfly have all the spares.......

Just popped down to Hitchcocks on the Super Four to get some carb bits. I must say that after its initial tantrums and getting it to fit me, the little four is growing on me. It still sounds as if it's doing the ton everywhere and seems massively undergeared but in other respects I'm enjoying it.
As for the Arrow, the voyage of discovery continues. I've now discovered:
- the front brake plate flapping about all over the place due to previous bodging
- the wiring from the alternator frayed and bodged
- the propstand incorrectly fitted and swiveling under load
- the steering head bearings very notchy.
All fixable but for a bike advertised as having everything necessary done I find it a bit much. I was seduced by the photos and after driving for 3 hours to look at it didn't take as much care as I should have.
Still it keeps me busy.

Not all today but...

I now have a plug for the heated jacket and on running lights only enough electrical power in reserve to be sure it won't ruin my day.
Had to send back a metal mule rack as they've been defeated by RE fittjng ABS and changing the frame. They were really good about it though. I have SERIOUS engine bars in paint (Indian, so need an extra coat or three before fitting).

For the last two glorious days of sunshine, I have rode the absolute nuts off this.....
Its still for sale, and sounds and runs fantastic, so much so, that I'm now not that bothered if I don't sell it. Up around the north Antrim coast was absolutely bunged today, as people arrive and get ready for the NW200. Ive never seen the place so busy, and thank f@@@ I was on such a nimble and manoeuvrable bike :)

Timbo said : Ive never seen the place so busy, and thank f@@@ I was on such a nimble and manoeuvrable bike" - which is why I headed to the Sperrins on the Harley!

Cracking run home from the NW200 this morning, on the Dommie. I went up on Friday for a couple of hours for the classic run, then went back up yesterday afternoon and stayed over. Thanks to a mates tip off, we camped in a great spot, in a private walled garden at Magheraboy, for £10. I highly recommend it, if anyone ever comes over for the NW200, as its always very tricky knowing where to stay :)

Out for a canter around Fife, chasing the 'Flying Scotsman' and her rake of carriages, with tag along diesel thing at the rear! ::) A magnificant sight everywhere we saw her and even in "amble gear", with the regulator knocked back, making good progress. We covered 160 miles dittering about! ;D
Arrived back home just afore the heavy showers, having picked up a couple of Thai green currys on the way home. Oh, so tasty, with a double hopped lager from Caledonian Breweries new range of brews (stocked by T***O up here) and followed by home grown and stewed rhubarb, with ginger yoghurt. ;D
NW200 looked good, despite the weather. Thank you for the "heads up" Tim.
Mr McGuinness appears to have been a lucky chap to get off so lightly, I hope he mends well and nobody holds a gun to his head to return to the roads. Time and himself will tell. :-X
My regards, Bill

Took my latest steed over 250 miles away at the weekend, to a small but perfectly formed RE rally near Foynes Flying Boat Museum, the far side of Limerick. First decent run on the bike, with a detour through the Silvermine Mountains. I have to say im really impressed with these MTs, and they are good value :)
