Just getting ready for the M4 commute. This could be the dumbest thing I've ever done, but I want to know how she handles in snow. Taking a flask JIK  ;)

It's alright for you, you've got a job, I've got to get out there and pretend I've got to get to work.

Got a day off here, but I plan on taking the MZ for a spin anyway, just to see the look on folks faces.

A long succession of 4wd ers going by the house all morning.

Power and internet going like the fiddlers elbow.

Bring on the dragon !

So much for this 'Red Alert' snow, it is rubbish, turning to water as soon as you compress it.

Tomorrows ice should be fun though.

It does raise the question of what bike is best suited to the conditions for solo riders as opposed to those with combos, pick up-ability seems to be my first thought, but then you have to be able to get along too.

I have C90s doing well, and I plan to try an MZ 125/50

Anyone with other suggestions

It doesn't really matter because it is cold you are so wrapped up nobody will recognise you.

Do you think we'll get many Harleys at this years Dragon then ?

Do they make one that could be picked up on the ice ?

The xbr does well in snow. Not today though as carb playing up. In fact did not go very far at all.

If only it was like this for the dragon. That would see off the 'day visitor pansies'

I remember following a snow plough down the motorway on a CB20RS as a young man. It handled it with aplomb and the disc brake really impressed me, pulling up the bike pretty quickly when pumped fast. I don't remember what tyres it was on, probably TT100s.

Yep, snow, wouldn´t that be great on the Dragon……

Lots of space to put up your tent and your gear and especially your white boots will not get muddy.  :o

If the bike won't go forward no matter what (and that's on a level drive!) I cant see what the riders to do?? Least I was trying.

Have to say though, makes you realise how good little thumpers are. Never "not made it cos of snow" before. In fact, I positively loved riding the XT in this sort of stuff.

See me off too Rob.  :-[ Unless I change tyres to TK80's and get some chains (neither of which is going to happen any time soon as I'm skint!) the Strom just won't go.

Pat,
you can take comfort in the knowledge that even if you had TKC 80's you probably would've got stuck a bit further down the road, just because it states M+S on the sidewall doesn't mean you're going to have top notch traction, far from it in fact, plus if theres ice under compacted snow you've no chance!,car tyres are very different, its amazing how much grip M+S marked car tyres have, but us Brits just don't get that,M+S  tyres for both can be used all year round.

We might be able to take that little experiment a bit further. Wee on Heidenau K60's likely to try a practice run tomorrow. Main roads here are clear but I know a few short lanes that won't be.

Anyway, my Dragon has already been cut back to a visit to the cafe on the Saturday. Wifes sister decided to get the nephew dunked on the Sunday, some short notice deal with the vicar  :( Ticket has gone to a one of the lads on the Weestrom site, no point getting the badge then riding towards a nice warm bed followed by a Sunday of being overdressed and under pressure to be nice to people.

Andy, sorry to hear that... as there is no charge for "dunking" you would think they could be more considerate.

You will be missed my friend...

Steff

PS I think there is far too much expectation on decent people to be nice!

Rob

Karens Birthday is sooner, but thank you for the kind thoughts.

Plan is to still head for my Friday night at Oswestry then depending on what time I get up, either call in at the cafe by the checkpoint or head straight home over the peaks to make sure my tie matches the chosen "outfit". If you are there early I might catch a few of the usual suspects for a quick hello.

I can't claim to have ridden a Thumper to work since 2006  :-[ Full time commuting ended in June last year, I can now have the car anytime since Karen goes by train. The Wee is in use 3-4 days a week, more if its going to be fun to ride, less if I'd have to clear the ice before I can move the car out of shelter in order to get the bike out. You will no longer find me commuting by bike in blizzards at night. I can't think of any day when I've missed going on the M62 at 6.45 AM.

At last it has snowed here. Trouble is I walk to work or use firms car with all the emergency kit in back . After all it is only 400 yards away..
HOWEVER after 0900 hrs tomorrow, off for 6 days. Getting the serow out, with its brand new tyres, for a blast over moors and tracks.
Might go onto mainland Orkney on Saturday. As there is a ploughing match. Tractors are like landys but slower and more reliable, in my opinion.
A bit miffed with all this talk about the Dragon maybe next year if everything works out selling houses and moving family up here.

beeman

ps any suggestions how to tell SWMBO I have somehow acquired a vf500 and transported it to Orkney with out her knowing.
Title: Re: SNOW
Post by: Steffan on January 23, 2013, 07:20:24 AM
Two options

1. Lie and tell her you found it in a hedge when you arrived.  Not recommended.

2. Wait until you have once again proved to her your domestic prowess and confirmed yourself worthy, in her eyes, of the highest honours in the pantheon of love gods, and then gently and casually whisper the truth to her between sips of Champagne. Good luck.

Steffan

1 it is then.
Unless anyone else has a bright idea.
Title: Re: SNOW
Post by: Steffan on January 23, 2013, 08:55:22 AM
Option 3.
One I have used on occasion:
Man it up and tell her

"Look beautiful, you know I love you, but as head of this household I have had to take an executive decision. This necessitated my acquiring (NB: don't use  the "buy" word)  an XYZ... would you like to come and admire it?"

Steff
Title: Re: SNOW
Post by: squirrelciv on January 23, 2013, 04:28:31 PM
Could go for the "You never listen to a word I say!" option and fake a rage when she questions the bike whilst telling her you discussed this months ago! If she refuses to go for it, follow up with the "You're losing your mind" counter as she can't even remember the conversation!

 ;D
Title: Re: SNOW
Post by: beeman on January 23, 2013, 04:54:19 PM
I've used the "You never listen to a word I say!" in the past with some effect. Must choose the right moment, when other news etc is dominating ie she has bought ANOTHER pair of boots.
Trouble is we are broke and I did acquire it 10 months ago in monthly instalments.
The trouble with Steffans approach is that she is the head of the household and any dissent always leads to trouble...............

Title: Re: SNOW

Go for the "It'll save us money in the long run" approach. Old bikes depreciate less, new bikes save the cost of the MOT, small bikes use less petrol, big bikes will wear less as they are less stressed.............

Maybe this only works on accountants though?

Andy
Title: Re: SNOW
Post by: guest987 on January 23, 2013, 07:39:10 PM
How about...........

{ Adopting an 'allo 'allo accent..}

" You stupid woman....Can you not see that this is NOT  a motorcycle. This has been supplied to me by the local health authority as a surgical simulator.  Stripping and cleaning the carbs simulates a quadriple by pass. Replacing the anti freeze simulates having ones stomach pumped. Anything to do with the air box corresponds to midwifery......."

I don't think Andys approach will work as this expects swmbo to think logically like a man. The "Allo Allo" approach is certainly worth a punt as long as I don't loose it and bottle out in the middle of it.

I think you'd have better luck handing Steff over than the keys to a bike (which you would of course never see again).

I once told Karen that if she didn't tell me what she wanted for Christmas soon enough to avoid the shopping rush I'd buy her a set of pans. Sure enough, Christmas Eve three badly wrapped pan shaped parcels appeared under the tree (actually filled with the real pressies). Needless to say the most appropriate carol would have been "Silent Night".

One Valentines my wife said " Don't get me chocys or flowers ...get me something useful"......so I bought her a new fork handle.....I even stuck a ribbon and a little heart on it.......it didn't go down too well.......I still get a twinge in cold weather.... :( :(

I knew a lad who had made a new aquisition, and when he had to come clean with the wife he decided to stand up for himself. I asked him what she said, he said she didnt say anything, she just fainted,
feinted with the left, and floored him with the right.
