Title: Irish Rally
Post by: RonXBR on February 14, 2012, 04:45:47 PM
The Irish Section aka The Brains Trust, would like to announce a rally on the weekend Fri 27th -- Sun 29th July. Campsite details can be found at www.shepherdsrestpub.com . It's approx. 4 miles outside Draperstown.  We do not have sole use of the site so numbers will be limited to 25-30 on a first come basis. (Mark counts as two). No problem if anyone wants to stay for extra days. Let me know as soon as you can. I'll post more info about site fees etc over the next couple of weeks.

Ron.

I googled Draperstown and it's in Ireland   :o

Will they let the Welsh in considering what we've been doing to them in the rugby lately. ;D

I should be ok for this one. Better put me down for 3 as the wife may want to come.

Hi Ronnie
Had been looking at campsites in Northern Ireland and this was on of the places I'd ear-marked. I will certainly be coming and I'm sure I can persuade Martyn over a few beer at the Derby Beer Festival this Friday!!!!!

Looking forward to it already.

I had high hopes for this rally. Having just seen the first four replies, maybe it's best to cancel the poetry reading for the Friday evening.

Similar plan here Boydyboy. Going Fishguard - Rosslaire then down to Baltimore and on up the west coast. Stop when I get to the top before doubling back to the rally site. Finally home will be Dublin - Holyhead and a blast through Wales.

Cannot Friggin' wait!!!

Hi Pat (or any other travellers to foreign parts)

Got a really good deal on ferries here (they used to be MotorSport Travel as promoted by the BMF):

kirsty@just-ferries.com

Just include dates/times, preferred ferry crossing, and state motorbike and rider, and they will do the rest!

Cheers

Title: Re: Irish Rally
Post by: RonXBR on March 21, 2012, 09:39:44 PM
Hello Steve,

Great you can make it to the rally. Being a Yorkshireman, I know you are fond of fresh air, so you can pitch up between Chris and Tony. You'll like it over here, in summer the rain gets quite warm.

Ron.

Hi Ron,

I've just been in touch with 'Just Ferries' (Kirsty) and received a quote for crossing over to you guys.

My intention is to travel from Huddersfield down to South Wales on the Monday and spend a night somewhere down there, then........

Fishguard to Rosslare Tuesday 24th @14:30 - 16:00 then camp ride for the next few days to meet up with you guys for the 'official' meet.

Return Belfast to Cairnryan Monday 30th 15:30 - 17:50 then spend another night somewhere in Dumfries before returning home.

Not having travelled by bike to Ireland do you think I will have enough time to cross over to the West and then travel up to the meet?

Oh aned I was quoted £85 return! :D
Title: Re: Irish Rally
Post by: RonXBR on March 30, 2012, 03:55:33 PM
Hello Steve,

Sounds ok to me. You might even bump into some of the others on your way. I know some people are spending extra days at the rally site, I'll probably be there from Thursday onwards. If there is enough interest we can organize a run for both Friday/Saturday.

Ron.

That sounds good to me as well, i just wanted to run my plans by you guys to see if I had made any glaring mistakes in my plans with the ferries and timing. :P
Now I just need to earn lots of beer tokens (Is Guiness a beer?) :o
...........and I'll need co-ordinates for the meet site. :D

Cheers SteveD

Right, the story so far. The following list of really nice people are booked in.

Boyd, Martyn, Mark+far better other half, Pat, Jethro+friend, Bettina, Matthias, Hartmut, Tommy+friend, Pat+Dave, Trevor, Steve, Ally, Tim, Tony, Chris and me. Still room for a good few.
There will be no funny hat contest this year, as some folk with odd shaped heads have a unfair advantage.  Instead, I was thinking of the most funny/interesting/original/rude/retro T shirt. So, have a good rumage round your drawers! Prizes of outstanding quality and value will be presented on the Saturday night.

Rick with the MT03 is now on board. :o
I will meet him sometime on the Monday somewhere in South Wales for the evening and then we can have a ridearound and catch the ferry (Fishguard) on Tuesday afternoon in time to find somewhere suitable on that evening.,
The plan will then be to mosey around and up for the meet perhaps Friday.
We will return on the Monday ferry from Belfast.

Now work, work, work! >:(

Richard, you've finacially helped the Greeks now you are helping the Irish.

Nobody should have to pay to get in to England but it is worth paying to go to Ireland, it's all relevant.

You even have to pay to come into Wales at the Severn Bridge(except motorcycles) but not when crossing into England.

Just looking for a nice smooth cigar (...)

I will be travelling through NL, Belgium, France, the UK and Ireland. It´s all EU. So no worries.

Quote:
If your purchases are equivalent to or less than the quantities set out in the table below, they will usually be regarded as being for your personal use. If you exceed these quantities, you may have to demonstrate at Customs that the goods are for your personal use.

Alcohol and tobacco allowances for travellers to Ireland from EU
Goods   Maximum quantity allowed
Cigarettes 800
Cigarillos 400
Cigars 200
Smoking tobacco 1 kg
Spirits (whiskey, vodka, gin, etc.) 10 litres
Intermediate Products (e.g. sherry, port, etc., excluding sparkling wine) 20 litres
Wine (only 60 litres of sparkling wine allowed) 90 litres
Beer 110 litres

I´ll bring my own smoking tobacco. Not sure about the beverages.  :D If I have to demonstrate at Customs the personal (ab)use I won´t be able to ride, I think.  ::)

As for what to choose, well it´s your choice, not mine. Maybe  this (http://www.vanlookeren.nl/contents/nl/d209_Nederlandse_sigaren.html) or this (http://www.hollandcigarhouse.co.uk/DutchCigarsView.html) will give you an idea. I´m not a “connaisseur”.

Maybe you can PM me, in order not to get too much off-topic…… (or maybe someone else needs something, but if I need a trailer I will ask some compensation for the ferries  ;))

Another silly question...

Will they take Euros on Northern Ireland?? I know it's part of the UK, but as it's so close to the Republic (attached, so don't suppose you could get closer!) Just wondered if they're accepted as well.

Pat (who thought the rally was in Ireland and now has a wallet stuffed with Euros :-[)

Hello Pat,
Getting close to 30 going to the rally. Euros are accepted at quite a few places near the border area but its best to use Sterling otherwise. By the way, Northern Ireland  has its own banknotes which are Sterling also. These include Ulster, Northern and Bank of Ireland notes which are legal tender in the UK. So don't think someones trying to pass on funny money. Any problems I'll help you to spend it.

Rally information. Just like to remind everyone that the Shepherds Rest does not provide meals, but have cooking facilities on site. There will be an electric kettle with tea/coffee etc available all day. Slim's Cafe in Draperstown is open from 9.00am for breakfast at very reasonable prices. They are bike owners themselves and will give you a warm welcome. There are also a couple of pubs which do evening meals.
The run on Saturday will start from the centre of Draperstown at 10.30am. This is to allow folk to have breakfast and fill up with petrol at the station there. We are going to Irvinestown where there is a vintage bike/car/whatever show on that day. The usual route maps will be available, it's a round trip of 100 miles.
Saturday night is the T shirt contest and prizes for the best bike etc. For anyone staying for a few days a trip to the North Antrim Coast road is well worth a visit. Start from Larne and just head north. It is a full day out from Draperstown so not suitable as the TC Rally run.
Any questions/suggestions for the rally, shout them out. (Polite ones, Mark)

Ron.

Can be anything really. Must be worn on the night.  Bikes, rock bands, funny, rude (not too rude), save the planet etc. T shirt with the most votes gets the prize. Myself, I'm going for a cheeky off the shoulder little number.

Rick and myself are catching the Ferry from Fishguard over to Rosslaire on the Tuesday 24th, 14:30 crossing. We will, depending on weather ride for a while and then find a camp site for the evening.

Question, do any of our Irish brethren have any recommendations for places to go, camp etc when we are over there? :o

I was supposed to be accompanying Boyd on this trip, but it's looking a bit doubtful now because of a death in the family.  Apologies Boyd - it's not much fun travelling on your own, but at least you'll avoid my snoring ;)

I don't think I should leave Sue on her own for a weekend as her brother has just passed away.

Have a great time all of you - catch you on another trip.

Home safe and well.

The biggest of thank you's to the Irish lads who did us proud. What a fantastic rally and what a fantastic country Ireland is. A special thank you to Alison for my picture which is going to have pride of place in my house. You'll be pleased to know it survived the journey unscathed.

Dublin was interesting if a little expensive and gave me the experience of sleeping with 5 women at the same time! Unisex dorms worked a lot better for me than it did for them.

Total journey distance 1111 miles.

Too knackered to say much more but I'll squeeze out another thanks to all who went. Great to see you all.

Now where's my bed...

Pat - I'm really jealous that you got the Alison original - can you take a picture of it and share with the rest of the Club?  I only caught a glimpse of it but was well impressed.

Cheers

It was great to see you all, though of course if Ronnie hadn,t been there, there might have been even more people attending!
Seriously though, I'd like to thank Ronnie, Chris, and Tony as they did most of the organising, me and Alison just turned up, and stole the gite/shed!
Thanks to Mark for the massive hangover and Enfield starting tips. Though when i got home, i discovered the kick start lever had took a severe strop and disappeared somewhere along the roadside. I went back tonight to look for it, and ended up eating half of Pat Keeling's Chinese takeaway, thanks Pat!
To Pat, Ally says that you deserve the picture with that sort of mileage.
To Trevor, really sorry to hear about your brother-in-law, so glad you still managed to come over. What's the story with the mangled wheel, looks scary. Great to see Ally drawing again at last, i'm sure you can have the next sketch when we next meet. :)

Had a great weekend, got home last night. Could tell that Ifor wanted to get home because we hit speeds of up to 50mph.

Well arranged and hosted by the Norn Iron crew, a good welcome was had at the cottage with open 'peat' fire, beer and chocolates.

Couldn't have been looked after any better at the pub or at Slims Cafe.

@Pat, you can scan Alisons sketch and make it available for us all to see and take a copy. >:(

@Tim, it was your bl00dy fault

@Tony, thanks, great SR.

@Chris, good ride out, nice and wet.

Just got back, well late this afternoon.

Big thanks to the Irish lads for organising such a good event, what a place to host it.

I had a ball all week, did the lot, England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland on the way back.

Far too much Guiness, but the biking soooo much fun. Loved every minute of the whole experience. The Irish persons that I met were soo friendly and accommodatiing.

Ragged up my rear tyre though and in only @ 1500 miles :P

Too tired to post piccies, will do when recovered!

All of the above with knobs on from me; excellent if slightly moist weekend. Shame we couldn't have stayed a few more (dry) days longer as NI is an interesting looking place.

Big thanks to Ronnie, Chris, Tony and Tim for organising the whole thing, and to those who ventured across. Good to see friends old and new, drink beers, burn stuff and talk crap - and long may it continue.

Massive scare for Trevor on the way back, that will cost him dearly to repair, but luckily was able to walk away from what potentially could have been very nasty; photos just don't tell the whole story.

So thanks again to everyone and hopefully see some of you again before I leave.

Hello All,

Well, that seems to to gone well, when's the next one?

Ron.

I could arrange a nice venue near Llandeilo for a get together if it's not too soon on the weekend of the 21-23 Sept plus days before or after if required for ride outs seeing as the Irish boys feel hard done by by not crossing the sea.

If there is a bit of interest I'll try to arrange something because me and a couple of mates will be there regardless.

Hello there in the rain,

at last we getting home - after Hartmut had has his rain depression and he had left us allone in Ireland on the sunday - Bettina and me traveled down Ireland on the westcoast.

@Steve D. - thanks for the information with the nice campsides, the one at the beach club was very good!

But after so much unf....believable rain in Ireland we decided to go one day earlier back to Wales. We`d travel arround in the breacon and beacon national park - the weather was even better but not without rain - and found a toll bridge with a nice little campside near Hay on Wye - it is called the toll bridge on Whittney on Wye - perhaps a Place for a next coming TC Rally?

After all and 4500 Km we`re at home and we want to thank all of you for the nice weekend! Here in Germany it`s raining  too but between the showers there is sun....

We got back in NL Sunday evening with 28 degrees temperature. Bloody hot, I can say.

After the Irish Rally we rode to the Giant Causeway and from thereon along the west coast to the south of Ireland. We saw dolphins jumping in the sea in front of our tent and did the Ring of Kerry. Returned to Wales and saw Mark and Ifor again. One night in Kent with beautiful weather and then the ferry Dover-Dunkirque.

We wish to thank the Irish crew for a beautiful event. Very well taken care off. Especially the goodies and the turf fire (we call it turf, but I think you call it peat) in the shed, of which I unfortunately didn´t make a picture.

Thanks again for everything! Ireland is great, both country and people, but it should have a roof.  ;D Remarkingly this doesn´t show on any pictures I have made.

Made numerous pics. Just two right now. Best T-shirt and most interesting (how the hell did it get there) bike on the rally.
