SRX rear disc
« on: April 12, 2007, 08:40:16 PM »
As part of the wheel conversion on the SRX I fitted a new rear disc. I was a bit miffed when this was pulsing badly after 1000 miles, but put it down to bad luck. Measuring the run-out it was around 0.7mm. Being a tight git I bought a second hand genuine disc of Ebay, guess what it was warped as well!!. At this point I just thought I was unlucky.
I had bought the new disc a long time ago, but even so thought I would speak to them to see if they would exchange it. He was a bit surprised and asked me to check thsi disc for warpage against a glass window. This showed it was warped but only by 0.15mm.
After a bit of headscatching I put the dial guage on the disc mounting posts and found one of them to be 0.2mm out, enough to put quite a runout on it at the edge of the disc. Not quite sure how this has happened but there we go. Stripping the wheel and machining it is hassle, so I'm thinking of shimming the disc. I spotted this stuff on Ebay

looks as if it would do the job, anyone else used it or something else similar ?

Hi There
Do not know if it was sureshim or similar, but was supplied with a load years back by a friends mum who was a mettalurgitist (eeeek I love spelling) for a well known engineering firm - they used it a lot.  I have used it for shimming out bearings.  Just in passing I was talking to some brake bod years ago- cannot remember who - and he was insistent that brakes should be shimmed so they fall square to the disk - he would set up race bikes - and friends road bikes by running the pistons and no pads gentely against the disk and measure the run out between the two, then shim out the brake mount to make the piston faces parallel to the disk - guess he mush have made sure the disk was runnig true too.
