Honda big bore kits
« on: October 21, 2017, 01:24:40 PM »
Hi All'
I know I've mentioned this before but has anyone got or know anyone who has any parts for the big bore XL250S I.E 305cc big bore kits, I've found out some information about several companies who did them, Henry Abe was one, Dixon Racing was another and a company called KK in Japan as well as Yoshimura.
I've been told by a local engineering company that a big Honda dealer who they work with remembers the kits but reckon finding one now would be impossible as they were as 'rare as rocking horse poo' if anyone has any information on these that would be great.

Aye tevie, might I suggest a look see and contact with this outfit in USA?

Another contact in the UK would be Eastwood Racing, Swanley, Kent, whom are importers of Wiseco pistons and Megacycle performance parts (cams) etc. I have dealt with Eastwood's and they know the Honda 4stroke and 2 stroke ranges very well. Vic the founder, having raced in the 1960's BBC Grandstand scrambles, with Jeff Smith et al.😊

If I remember, there was a write up and test of this mod using JE pistons in either the 'Cycle' or 'Dirt Bike' magazine's from USA, when this model was popular. Due to being crocked at the moment 😕 I cannot go and dig out the articles in my workshop that I think I have a copy of, once up on my feet I will see what I can find, but that could be some weeks away yet.

I hope this helps and please keep us posted of positive or negative developments.

My regards, Bill

Hi Bill
I have seen that website before and thought they only dealt with the early 70's XL's like the motorsport but on second looking they do say email them if you want something not listed so I've emailed them to see if they've got any S model parts.
Thanks Bill , I'll let you know if I have any luck

Hi Steve

Excuse my ignorance but is your engine similar to the one used in the Honda cb250rs? I have a couple of articles from 1984 where they tested the Honda CB250RS fitted with the big bore kit taking it out to 294cc and using a Yoshimura stage 1 cam. The kit was fitted by Dave Dixon racing and by all accounts was quite impressive. I could send you a copy of these if they are of any interest

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony
Yes that would be great. would you be able to scan the article and send it to me, I don't know how we send stuff on this website so hopefully you do.
Bill.
I've just had a reply from the American website but they can't help me so the search continues.

Aye Steve, I am sorry that didn't work. Maybe an e-mail to JE Pistons in the USA, as they manufactured those originally used. They are likely to have the OE piston dimensions and might offer an alternative from their current "stock" range of 4stroke pistons. 😉

I will keep being inquisitive! 😊

this place any good? they specialise in xr stuff but im wondering if the engines are that different. i know on the earlier xl's they have the same motors as the xr but with a lower state of tune.

Thanks for the response chaps, particularly Tony, It's given me a few ideas, there are still a few kits out there.
There is also the possibility of using a Honda GX 340 generator piston with a sleeved down gudgeon pin hole and a new liner but it's early days yet, my idea of having a small business rebuilding Honda four stroke singles is still in the planning stage at the moment.
Thanks again
Steve
