Slow Spanish bimble in June 17
« on: October 24, 2016, 07:38:26 PM »
This may sound a bit weird.....but next year I want to take the bike across to Spain, bimble around the Picos de Europa for a few days, no more than 150 miles a day and taking it easy.

The trouble is that, as an old fart returning to biking, it is a bit daunting on the lonesome. Not sure if I want to join a tour group, I couldn't keep up and I just fancied a few days in the mountains rather than rushing around Spain. The plan was to take the ferry down from Portsmouth and return the same way after a week.

I wonder if there are any others in the same predicament who fancy a bit of an adventure?

These are the Picos de Europa http://www.thepicosdeeuropa.com/

Evening Tim, if I didn't av two children to sort out day in, day out I'd probably jump at the chance. Sounds like a good trip, I'm sure there must be someone on here who's up for it. Best o luck. Cheers, Michael

This may be of interest. I picked up a leaflet from the Piston Club, at Stafford. They are a Spanish club which organise a number of events throughout the year, including a tour of the Pico's d'Europa  :)

All sorted, booked passage on a windjammer out of Pompey, will swarm ashore in Bilbao and return by the good port of Cherbourg.

Have fun.

Daniel and I may go to Madrid and Lisbon next year, very loose plans at the moment. What time of year have you booked? it might be possible to link up.

Pat & I did the Moto Piston meet a couple of years ago. The 'classic bike' meet is around this time of year and it's a lovely area to ride in.
This year and last, we spent a few weeks in the Pyrenees , we had a Guzzi meet Spain this year and the Wheels & Waves at Biarritz in France last year and it's a big area to cover, but well worth going. Ideally you need more than a week, but you can always go back.

Another thought....if you go to the NEC bike show, Brittany Ferries normally have a stand and offer a 10% discount code, I used it last year, after I had booked and they still gave me the discount.
I'll be going again in a few weeks time, so if they are offering a discount, I'll get the code and post it here.
Dave.

Picos are nice.  Ferry to Santander or ride down through France.  Great mountains, scenery and proper twisty roads.
Note to Self: Shiney side goes UP.

Hi,

We had to change due to ferries but a quick rethink, lots of internet activity and we have a working plan!

San Sebastian

Early on 13th June, we meet in Pompey and then float down to Bilbao, bimble through the Basque region of Spain, along the West Coast of France to Normandy and home on 21st June.

The total route mileage is about 700 miles spread over a week and the individual cost should be about £450 including Brittany Ferry fares+no-frills acccomodation but not including food/fuel etc.  All bookings etc are the responsibility of the individual.

No huge speeds or ultra long distances - average daily grind of no more than 105 miles. The weather should be warm not the mega heat of mid-year but we will take waterproofs.

The overnight stops:-

    Portsmouth ferry to Bilbao
    San Sebastian
    One overnight stop enroute
    Bordeaux
    La Rochelle
    Nouvelle-Aquitaine
    Loire valley
    Normande west coast
    Cherbourg ferry to Poole

Please note, I am not organising a group merely throwing out a suggestion if anyone wants some company on a medium sized adventure but doesn't fancy doing it alone.

Anyone still up for a bimble before age takes its toll? PM for more details.......
