Converting xt to SR electrics

Ok, time to think about electrics on my xt, since im going to have to source some stuff one way or another.
Id like to just go with the 12v SR500 stuff that someones told me I can swap in, rather than converting the alternator lighting/charging tapping position to give 12v, as Im under the impression itll give more/more stable output to charge a gel battery (they dont like lumpy sine wave charging). Also Id like the SR electronic ignition , since in the pile of bits I got with the XT I have found a solitary atu that is seized, and no ignition coil/igniter etc and I'd rather just convert it to leccy ignition once and be done with it. Sooo, Im wondering if anyone has a shopping list of the bits needed to convert it/knows what will bolt straight on?
So far I can think of is the alternator coils, flywheel/magnets itself, a reluctor for the igntion (or does the SR still use a atu with reluctors?), the igniter box itself and a reg/rectifier. Any links or stuff that'd be usefull, or parts?
I could be barking up the wrong tree as the conversion info I have is 3rd hand, so if I am, feel free to put me right...

Since an alternator's outpout voltage is a function of RPM, you may be able to get away with keeping the one you've got. Reg/recs are more or less universal: just get from a wrecker any 12V one with the same number of yellow input wires as your alternator.

A few SR owners are converting back to points these days to fix the regularly failures on their aging electronic ignitions, so I'm told.

As GB says, you shoud be able to get a fine 12V just by changing the reg/rec to a 12 V item, (and changing the coil and bulbs of course)

Aye Mr Fluffy,

Used to run a Ducati single with EI etc in 1976!!!!! Converted back to the old points and used 'The Prince of Darkness' zener diode with a RS bridge rectifier for years with few problems to achieve a 12v system. Use just the two yellow wires to the rectifier and tape up the other. Not sure what you may have.

Solid state EI are more reliable now, but you can fix points at the side of the road. All in one rectifiers and zener diodes are probably neater and more reliable than my old set up. The Honda Dream 250 one used to be the one of choice when the old Suzuki 4's blew theirs, I don't know what the modern equivalent is.

If you have the dosh, programmable electronic ignitions are now available but they are the top end of £270-£300!!!! Seen on Ebay occasionally. However, it's the rider which makes the difference!

Must get over to Arbroath for my fish supper soon, but the har at present will be keeping it a 'COOL' place! ;-)

i love the fact my sr500 is a kick start!!! it feels great kicking it over and really feeling it burst into life knowing that it was me who physically made the engine move ya know??

Mind I do nto think I have had a bike with a kick and electric that I have not removed the electric from - In my day they were called "Whimp Buttons" - I think it is because the bike when whimp-whimp-whimp braaaaagggggggggg - rather than the kick-kick-kick-kick - work you b&&&&&&& braaaaggggggggggggggggg.

Mind the RD500 couild be started by hand, just leaning on the kicker one handed spun her over and fired her up.  Would never try witht e Triton, nor the rotax when she was runnign- kick back too often.

I dont want to do away with the kickstart at all, in fact my gs is kickstart only after the electric start drive's space got needed for a belt to drive the supercharger (I am cowarding out and building a starting roller for when its feeling naughty though). Im fine with starting the buggers especially the singles, I dont even have a valve lifter on my sp. I just want the spark to happen all the time irrespective of if Ive bothered to mess with the points or change the condensor recently and not have to wait weeks for special 6v halogen or low power 12v bulbs to make their way to my house when the vibration kills yet another bulb.
 I was really just after if I could just physically bolt on the stator and mag from the SR, and if that would give me more and smoother output (ie is it a 3 phase output stator or another single phase unit, since the 3 phase dont give lumpy sine output that the gel cell wont like), and if I could just use the ignition reluctor off the SR motor on the XT. Im not tooo worried that the advance curve might not be exactly the right shape etc since if it starts detonating the magic barrell of toulene will come out and I can tweak the pin that locates the atu reulctor a bit anyway. I just never have seen the SR system, normally Id take a peek at one in bits, but theyre a mite rare here in rural france, so the first time I get to see the bits will be when they arrive after I have bought them!
Theres also the point that I physically dont have any ignition components in one of the teachests that my xt arrived in, so Id like to just get the 12v stuff to start with if it physically bolts on exchange. Yes I could get the 6v stator and change the tapping, but then it would reach 12v for a lot less of the time, since there is still the same amount of overall power in the system, hence p=vi, i would drop and I wouldnt be able to run some of the other toys Id like. Im assuming the sr500 has more wattage output at this point, but could be wrong, havent totally done my sums and research yet.
Perhaps time to pour over a sr manual. Have to have a poke round for one...
