XBR500 Clutch Cover & Oil Tank Gasket
« on: July 14, 2014, 02:21:28 PM »
Hello,
Am new to this so hope I am posting in the right place?

I have an '86 XBR500 with a '85 engine in it which ran Ok but was 'tatty' so I removed the engine to paint it and tidy up the frame. On re-fitting the engine, I have run into a problem of having great difficulty putting back on the clutch cover. This sems to be to do with a location peg, on the actual cover, just under where the kick-start shaft passes. The peg is slightly damaged but I can see no place where it is intended to fit as there is nothing around the k/s shaft inside the cases. Any ideas please?

Also, I would like to split the oil tank but gaskets for same appear to be long unavailable. Does anyone know of a pattern gasket or will one from another honda dry-sump model fit.

Thanks a million if anyone can help me here.

Did you push down the cam follower lever down , when installing the clutch cover?
Is the starter cam punch mark aligned with the kickstart spindle punch mark?
I had the same problem, hope this helps.
Why split the oil tank, just swill it out with some white spirit,if you must.

There is a metal screen filter in the oil tank. I had to split the tank and clean it after carrying out an oil and filter change some time ago. I always check the oil flow to the cambox afterwards and it looked less than normal. There was quite a bit of sludge and fluffy material on top of the screen although I change the oil and filter every 1000 to 1200 miles but the bike had done nearly 50000 miles at that time.
David Silver had gaskets then. (about four years ago)

Well, yes I did.
You said you would like to split the oil tank so I was just pointing out that there is a metal screen filter inside which can get blocked and gaskets may still be available from David Silver.
