CB250RS - Comedy Engine fault or lucky B?
« on: January 12, 2014, 06:03:29 PM »
I think this might make someone smile - I'm still grinning:

Had this CB250RS running briefly, it died in the Galloway hills. It's since been in the garage 4 years. Finally had a wee look...

Rocker box off shows very worn camchain (wedge shouldn't stick out more than 8mm, or be shiny where it's hitting the engine cover. Ahem). I'd done tappets, then ignored the loud tapping still present - well, it was a pretty rough bike!

Camchain is VERY DEAR (£50ish!), took off side cover with view to checking tensioner damage, metal flakes, etc, and found this:

Big nut holding on ATU (pulsar, and mech advance) has undone itself, only held on by engine cover! As a result, pulsar senser bit has popped out of engagement with arms/springs of baseplate - no wonder it wouldn't run!
Amazingly, nothing seems damaged! I'll put it back together roughly without changing camchain, just to see if it runs now - if so, it's worth camchain (also a bit of work on carb - butchered by P.O. I hasten to add. I've fixed accelarator, and a couple of other bits, but it leaks a bit).

The only worry is this:

The pulsar senser bit (the oval bit at the front) will fit into the baseplate 2 ways, 180 degrees apart (it could be worse). I think these photos show it assembled correctly - but tell me if you know better!

The baseplate has TEC stamped at 6 o'clock, and 428 stamped at 12 o'clock. The oval spinny bit has ONE END with a magnet (?) in it (2 vertical strips) - I think it's the end NOT visible in the Haynes book photo, nor the photo above as I've assembled it, where magnet strip is at about 2 o'clock.

Photo below shows magnet strip

Final evidence is in photo below, B stamped in non-magnet end, dirty patch in magnet end...as per Haynes photo.[/quote]

Advice appreciated on whether I've got this right, cheapest camchain choice, and crucially whether I should or shouldn't get a camchain with a split link - I've only done a CX cam (with help) which is totally different (transverse engine split). I'm at. or beyond, my technical ability here!

I don't think it makes any difference which way the a/r unit fits as it runs at engine speed and there is always a 'spare' spark on the exhaust stroke. Regarding the cam chain tensioner, I've got two engines and on both of them the protruding piece at the top actually touches the cam cover to no detriment to the motor. You can change the chain if you fancy it but if so the tensioner ought to be replaced too, the possible cost assuming that you can get a new one of both will be in the region of £90/100. Personally I wouldn't bother. Best of luck.

The wasted  spark refers to the spark on the exhaust stroke. The assembly of the AR unit is important otherwise you will have a spark at the bottom of the stroke rather than the top. To be certain I would put the piston at TDC and make sure the magnet on the AR unit is pointing towards the sensor (from memory its inside the casing)

Cheers gents - what I did was put it together, heat spark plug with blowtorch, strap big battery onto side with bungees, and balance peetrol tank on it, with 4 year old petrol.

It started on about 10th kick, runs, revs, ticks over!
quite a breeze from the hole where the tacho drive isn't, and lots of oil spitting when revved (think that's good).

Still quite a tapping, presumably from the tensioner wedge hitting rocker cover.

When time, will strip down and have a go at camchain/tensioner replacement, I think. And carb rebuild (petrol drip). And front brake. And air filter (it's turned into goo in the bottom of the airbox.)

Cheers folks, keep the advice coming!   It's awfy nice when they fire up - a tear in ma eee.

Dont leave the camchain slack, it will wear through the camchain tunnel or it will jump a tooth and put a valve through the piston.
Endless chains are about £35 and you only need to replace the tensioner if its excessively grooved. These bikes are excellent little machines and can go for years if regularly maintained, I had one once with 68000 miles on it, and the first one I had hit 96mph

My god - 68K? Smashing!

Yep, theyARE great if looked after. I had a LOVELY one (got nicked), a slightly rough one (electric start, bit quicker I believe. Blew it up, sorry), gf had a lovely one (split up, she left it to rust apart), and now I have this rough one (belonged to a friend who bought bigger bike, left it till wheels seized solid). This latest is the one I got going about 5 yrs back, but ignored the top end hammer (tensioner!!!).

Now hoping to do the right thing (=new camchain), as they DO handle well, sound good, and go fast if you're 11 stone.

Ta for your input.
