Got the SRX started today, but.....
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:37:57 PM »
Finally got the bike running, with a bump start. Then an oil and petrol mix started running
Down the left hand side of the bike. Had a look, oil breather pipe had split, looked at air filter
and it was stinking of petrol. Checked the oil level - full to the top with oil/petrol.
I've drained the oil tank an filled with fresh oil. Just want to know how or why petrol
would get into the oil tank/air box ???

Aye Fatboy,

Suspect the fuel tap attached to the left hand frame tube had been left in the 'Prime' position or else the diaphram in the tap isn't working and preventing the flow of petrol to the carburetter float bowl. In the carburetter float bowl some dirt has stuck between the float needle and it's seat, therebye allowing the petrol to run down the inlet tract, past the valve, down the the side of the piston past the rings and fill up the sump.

Others may have different opinions and consider their points as well as mine, I'm fallible!   ???

It would appear that you need to do a thorough clean out and check of the fuel side of things and also the oil side. Get some 2/ oil in the bore afore you go spinning the motor over, just to give some lubrication to the rings.

I hope that it all sorts out OK.

My regards, Bill.

Thanks for the advise. I've put a new fuel tap
kit on, replaced the float needle, cleaned out
the carb. Started the bike again today with
fresh oil, ran it for no more than 2mins. Petrol
back in the oil. ?????
At least it started on the first kick.  :D

Steve, after running I checked the oil level
full to the top and stinks of petrol. I've drained
the oil off again. So fingers crossed you're
right and it's just residual petrol.

Aye Fatboy,

May I ask if you are just draining the oil from the bottom of the oil tank, or are you draining from both the tank and the sump drain plug? If all you are removing is the plug at the bottom of the tank, then you also need to remove the plug beneath the sprocket on the left hand side of the motor. Change the oil filter element on the front right-hand side and bleed air from the system using the bleed screw on the top of the case.

I hope this helps.

My regards, Bill.

You're ace. Didn't know about that sump plug
drain. I'll get onto it tomorrow.
Cheers ;D
