What a shite day
« on: January 26, 2007, 08:07:40 PM »
My Land Rover ate its gearbox today, I had to drive home in second gear :-(

Anyone know the best place to source a new box?

I guess I should feel lucky because my military Landy has a removable cross beam and the box can be removed from below (unlike the civvy model where it comes out through the cab) but I don't feel very lucky at all today.

I'm guessing I'm looking at a £500+ bill with labout costs and whatnot. Added to this woe is my complete lack of transport whilst its stuffed.

Ho hum

I hear that the 3rd and 4th synchro is the box's weak spot and that it's not uncommon to find the remains of syncro springs in the oil. There's reassuring.

Ebay has a recon box listed at £325, but Craddocks want £450!

All you got to do is borrow Sues car.
Come over pick it up and put it in the back by yourself and its yours !  ;-)

But if you need help to pick it up it will cost you £30 and you can have it !

To be fair I was a bit preoccupied today when I saw you, contemplating driving the crippled truck home through early Friday rush-hour. It was a pain and you'd be amazed how few people cut the 'Gearbox broken' sign in the rear window any slack.

Cheers

bl**dy Landy boxes!

They're easy to work on, I'll give you that, but the synchro rings ALWAYS fail except on the series 3 where they replaced metal parts that had proven reliable with plastic so the bl^^dy thing would only run in reverse. I've sat on a groundsheet 10 hours' drive from the nearest mechanic with gears and rings and spacers spread out, trying to figure a way to make the 2nd-3rd cluster work. The Austin Gypsey was way better, and its springs (unlike the Landy's) never broke. Mind you, it didn't have brakes, but that's a niggle.

Well obviously you have a free box (and a removeable crossmember you lucky git!) so you're sorted this time. Less than a days work there and a cost of a few pasties, can't be bad. If it *does* feel bad then price a new box for a Mitsubishi/Toyota or whatever...
Series 2 boxes lack synchro between 1 and 2 but have a reputation for never breaking within the off road clubs up here, another alternative is to whack in an LT77 (Defender) gearbox. You'll need to get props made up and put a cut out put into the gearbox crossmember, oh and fit a defender starter motor but apart from that it gives you a very strong box, 5 gears and permanent 4wd... and if you can find a Defender type donor that's all ok anyway.. mind you, you *ought* to change the UJ's on the front axle to CV's but I know a couple who just didn't bother!

When mine eventually gets hammered into submission I'm going to have to get the gearbox crossmember cut out and modified into a bolt off type, 'cause I'm stuffed if I'm taking the seat boxes etc out again!!
