honda xbr 500 single bad starting

hi all this is my first evening of being a member, i was wondering if anyone has come across a problem where the bike will start of the kick starter but wont start of the electric starter although its all turning but to no avail, the bike has just been rebuilt along with a new carb, it also runs a bit rough and wont tick over yet because its not had chance to be set up yet, any advise would be greatly received heres hoping,cant wait to get moteand riding it lol cheers all, andy bish

XBR leccy starts are generally a bit crap unless the bikes warmed up, and if your battery's getting a bit elderly they're pretty much useless. Mine's always been the same. If my bikes been standing for more than a week or so I can crank it with the button for 10 minutes before it fires up yet it'll go after 2 or 3 good kicks. Rough running won't help either. I reckon you'll see an improvement once you've got your carb set up right.

Like Fuzz said, check your valve clearances. The manual says 0.10mm in and 0.12mm ex but they've been revised to 0.15mm in and 0.19mm out. I find adjusting the tappets a fiddly-arsed affair on the XBR but it's best to err on the side of rattly rather than too tight. Hope this helps a bit
