Hi
Thanks for the suggestions for cleaning the cylinder fins.I found that a bit of wire brush,followed by  a soak in gunk and a good spray,followed by a coat of wd40 did the job

Evening Chris,

Wire brush OK, but better if it has stainless bristles. Ordinary steel can break and leave bits embedded in the alloy, resulting in electrolitic reaction (corrosion)! May seem fussy, so the choice is yours. ;-)
