No one does a steel replacement for the XBR (to my knowledge). It's either a home made jobby or stainless predator £325 from www.gazbikes.co.uk , company called http://www.osmc.co.uk/ don't know how much, or keep your eye out on EvilBay for anyone breraking a bike.

Should be able to mate- you need to find a decent welder who will fill in the holes with weld or weld a piece in. Then grind them off back to shape. I use the VHT black spray- seems to be that the silver does not work so well.
Watch the nuts on the manifold when you are taking off- suggest a good few days soaking and (gently bentley) hope they don't snap the bolts off.
If you have access to heat on your nuts that also helps (!!)

Cheers

If your downpipes are OK you should be able to fit a universal type silencer if you carefully cut off the old silencers.  Dunstalls make some nice looking silencers which should fit your downpipes.

Otherwise you'll have to watch Ebay for a laser or Micron system.

Nice replies all.Very interested in Steves idea, but when you say cut old ones off is this because the new are longer and the fixing points would be out?The down pipes are getting rusty in places but i think a session with wet n dry and black heat paint would look acceptable, main rust as usual on bit in front where water sprays up.

That's the problem with buying universal cans- you may end up cutting off your downpipes which you may need in the future. Has the Laser got downpipes and a separate can? Or is it a complete in one system?

If you have an older XBR the silencers and downpipes are seperate pieces, you should be able to unclamp the silencer from the downpipe near the footrest and pursuade the silencer off.

If you have a newer XBR the downpipes and silencer and welded one piece - Basicaly the silencers is welded to the downpipe. The downpipe extends into the first part of the silencer so you need to carefully cut the silencer from the downpipe with a hacksaw.

Best bet is to measure the diameter of the downpipe first and get the silencers of your choice.  Once you have the silencers you can offer them up to the bike and then you will see if you need to cut anything off the silencer end of the downpipe - probably best not to unless you really have to as it may mess up the backpressure in the exhaust.

You may have to be a bit creative with brackets to get them to fit but I wouldn't think it's a big problem.

Finally you may find the carburation is a bit off - you may need to go up a size or two on the main jet but try it first - chances are it will be fine.

Have a look through the gallery or on google images to get an idea of what others have done and which pipes look best.  if you need to know the length of the part inside the pipe give me a shout as I have an old seperate downpipe I can measure for you.

Aye peteXBR500

Drain holes enlarging due to corrosion?  ???

Maybe a drop of MIG weld to reduce hole size would be sufficient?

Just a thought.

My regards, Bill.

Thanks again to all who have helped. My xbr is a D'reg import? kmh speedo...etc. The exhaust is an old 2 piece affair. Luckily enough a new guy started work with me is a ex-mechanic and said he would happily weld the holes which he said appeared to be happening on the spot weld points from inside the exhaust. He will also fit my new rear suppension springs for a couple of pints.  :)

There is hope after all  :D

The only problem left now is if the head light being European beam will pass an M.O.T

But the worst of my worries are now over, thank you all  :D

If you switch the light on and see where the "dip" part angles up to the right, then place the tape to mask that bit.  You end up with a flat beam, which will pass.
