Just got back from Angelsey (watched some vintage racing) on the SRX600, its the first lengthy ride I have done on it and it pissed down all the way.

My question is 'do they suffer terribly in wet conditions' as mine was cutting out quite often and had the use WD40 every 30 miles or so. What can be done to remedy this.

......and my exhaust fell off but thats another issue.

Aye Mark,

Common problem.

It goes with the 'fashionable' shorty front mudgaurd and vulnerable position of the coil and plug.

I've eased, but not totally cured the problem by fitting a cheap universal mudflap to the front mudguard, extending it by about 80mm, maybe 100mm.

Cleaning all the electrics, installing a new NGK spark plug cap and using ACF50 on all the wiring under the front of the tank.

Finally, installing a small plastic deflector (ice cream tub) behind the oil cooler, extending down between the front frame tubes and held on by cable ties. Just to keep the spray in the updraft from the front wheel from blowing directly onto the plug area. Don't make this too big, or else you reduce the airflow to cool this part of the head. Same idea as used to be used by Rickman on their scrambles bikes.

Despite all this, I have on occasion, still to resort to the WD40 or ACF50!

Bit dodgy in the outside lane at 70 - 80mph!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tips Bill, good to know I'm not alone.

Mine cut out doing 70 whilst overtaking a coach doing ...er.... nearly seventy on THE straight bit of mid Wales road, I was obviousy slowing up and wanted to get in behind the bus and he was trying to help and slowed up to try and let me in front, I was outside for what seemed like ever.

The best quality of the SRX is its width.

hey mark

yep, a well-known flaw!

I got round it simply by fitting a NGK, solid rubber, long (red) plug cap (and a small jubilee clip at the top of it to clamp it. No more problems after that, but maybe I was just lucky. Subsequently always fitted the same caps to my bikes.

I tried to get a pic of one or a link on ebay. No joy, but I can get a part number if you are enough of an anorak?!

Yes, great bikes tho. Agreed about the size. Perfect for most things (tho perhaps not 2-up touring!, but I have been abroad on one)

Cheers Andy I'll sort one of those plug caps out, I know the ones you mean I think they are used on jetskis etc so makes good sense.

Aren't straight road and Wales an oxymoron?

Hi, yes my 'fix' for this problem is the same as andy230's plus i fabricated a shield from a 4 pint milk carton which i 'tywrapped' under the coil (i prefer this method as it doesnt interrupt the airflow over the engine...
It is worth mentioning that the finning in front of the plug actually has gaps in, so that no water/crud etc builds up, on a strip down i usually find these get bunged up a bit with the inevitable interference with the electrics, might be worth poking it around with a bit of wire and an airline to clean it up.

Ok, fitted a plug cap from a jet ski onto the srx, all I need now is some rain to try it out, typical of my luck, it's bloody sunny now.
