SRX exhaust conundrum
« on: June 02, 2009, 08:38:11 AM »
Hi. As discussed in another thread I managed to mistakenly buy a mono silencer for Rex, my 86  twin  shock project :'( . Helpful suggestions have included using the mono 2 into 1 headers but I'm loath as the headers I have are in great nick now I've polished them up. Plus I'm about to buy a house & am gonna be brassic. Aftermarket silencers are so expensive, as is a new Yamaha item, so I'm toying with this idea: see what you think. if i can get the mono silencer to fit the frame, what about fabricating a two into one adaptor & then cutting the headers down to allow for the extra length this will create? All I'm wondering is whether the headers are double skinned? ??? If so I couldn't really cut the ends off?

I know nothing about these bikes so advice very welcome.

Alternatively, does anyone have a silencer to sell? and if so does anyone want to buy a nice mono silencer, solid & good nick?

Cheers for now. Leah

1. The headers are single skin stainless steel.
2. a 2 into one adaptor is what a lot of people do.
3. you should (from memory) be able to fit the mono silencer to the frame ok,. You'll need to do this first, make sure it's exactly how you want it, then take the bike with silencer fitted, and header pipes to a good metal fabricator (finding one is the big problem), you'll be paying for a few hours work, so it still won't be cheap

Thank you Steve, that was the sort of thing I had in mind. I think i know someone who can make an adaptor, I think I can make it all fit, what i don't know is how the bike will perform. are there any differences in engine tune/carburation between the twin & mono?

as far as I can remember the silencer on the monoshock is the same as the twinshock, apart frpm fittings as the chassis is different......and the srx engine with standard carbs is pretty forgiving on aftermarket cans....you can alway go for a dynojet carb kit and a freeflow airfilter
