xbr500 exhaust system
« on: May 30, 2009, 09:12:15 PM »
Hello all, hope someone can assist. I have an XBR500 1989 and the exhaust downpipes have rusted through. I have contacted David Silver spares to get replacements, but they only supply the left pipe (full exhaust unit) and state that Honda have discontinued the right unit. Any compatible downpipes out there? Best place for second hand spares?

Thanks to all considering response.

Best Wishes

Bollocks, Dai Silver was our best source of NOS spares  :(

Might be worthwhile giving OS Pipes a shout - they do a full system for the XBR - click here for pics - so they might be willing to knock you up a set of downpipes.  Not necessarily the cheapest - the guy quoted me near as dammit £500 for a full system and I'd have to let him have my existing set to check his jigs, but .....

You're welcome

Trouble is the original downpipes are double-skinned. The fat chrome outer hides a more efficient smaller diameter inner.

Pretty much as I expected as have searched high and lo. Am not going down the 2 into 1 road as I much prefer the twin look. Will wait patiently for a pair to appear - either separate from breaking bike, or from complete bike, £500 for exhausts, you can get a full XBR for that (almost). Have sourced the parts from a German company after entering part numbers onto internet, but again approx £500 for the set and a bit too rich for my blood.

Thanks to all for responses.

As suggested have contacted OS pipes and am having downpipes made for £180. Already have silencers so no need for full exhaust kit. Only problem here is I have to remove the old pipes myself as OS wll not (although OS will fit pipes and silencers after removal) and have already managed to shear one bolt with very little effort!

I've just spoken to them myself, they're going to make me some big-bore downpipes at the same time  ;D ;D

These big bore down pipes, single pipes or 2-1?

What sort of money (if you don't mind me asking)?

Pipes will be twin downpipes, same shape as the originals but 35mm bore. Cost is £180, he did say that if we'd got together it would have been £160 for two sets the same (bent at the same time). I reckon that they should work quite well, even the XLs used to run bigger downpipes back in the day. White Brothers used to sell them, I think they were made by Supertrap.

Will they use captive flanges or will you need to use the standard Honda collet and flange setup?

I didn't ask, I would assume captive flanges because of the bigger bore. I've sent off a deposit and I'll talk to him again in a few days to finalise the details. Incidently I measured the HRC pipe, the downpipes on that are also 35mm.
