Abigail's out from under the dust sheet
« on: February 12, 2008, 09:18:29 PM »
Finished sulking and I've decided to press on with something, anything to keep some sort of momentum in this project. A pair of fair condition XBR rear shocks and a dommie rear disc have been aquired with the view of finishing the rear brake conversion.
Next will be the fibreglassing and loom, so I have to find a complete headlight assembly and some indicators as well as sort out a rear light.
The motor is going to have to wait for a bit. The reason is purely down to me needing to see distinct progress to keep up my enthusiasm. Mr Stringer sit by your phone! I may have need of your talents when it comes to making the rear wheel spacers ;D
Wish me luck guys, I'm going in! ;)

Cheers matey ;D

So Far, I've managed to sourse a headlight off a CB500 (I think) and have stripped the loom completely ready for a sort out. I want to simplify the loom as much as possible (get rid of the clutch/stand cut outs and tail light monitor) as well as repair some damaged wires.
My ebay find of a pair of shocks will need a touch up with some paint when the weather warms up a bit and I still need a dommie rear brake rotor so I can finish off the caliper mount and wheel spacer.
After that, it's fibreglass all the way till I finish the bodywork. But like the painting, it needs warmer weather before I can start.

Love it!! ;D

Give me the measurements and I might be able to turn down something for you !
I have access to a lathe on occasion !

A question from the curious... a brake rotor is american for a brake disc (in my experience!) So are you aiming to turn down a brake disc  ???
Not that it's a problem, just curious!  ;)

Many years ago there was a beautiful MV based special in one of the mags, that had a pair of manhole covers turned back as rotors - good quality cast iron apparently - and exhausts made from salvaged stainless handrail from a swimming pool.

Funny this thread should float to the surface this morning. I've just recieved a second hand rotor from a chap on the XRV forum this morning! How spooky is that? :o
I've got to finish the fibreglass stuff before I can start the rear brake assembly due to the shelf life issues of the resin. (plus warm weather = better cure rates) But with those two jobs out the way, I'm left with the motor, exhaust and wiring.

She's getting there ;D

Little update for you.
Tank, seat & tail piece and mudguard now made and being prepped for paint. Side panels were a failure I'm afraid as the complex curves I'd hoped for to allow them to flow with the shape of the frame didn't work. Not a total disaster though as they are the right shape and will be used as a pattern for some thin aluminium replacements.

Onward and upwards ;D
