XBR Choke cable
« on: February 03, 2008, 02:15:55 PM »
OK, finally trying to sort the XBR  :-[
Does anyone know if the choke cable can be replaced with the carb in situ? Is there anything I need to know before I start the job? Anyone got a description/diagram of the procedure?
Cheers,
Smudge

The choke cable is held in place in the carb by a plastic nut. Simply unscrew this and the plunger, etc. will pull out. Once it's in your hands it will all be obvious.

When you are dismantling it all, be very careful not to lose the little circlip that holds the plastic section on the cable.

Cheers

p.s. Do me a favour, if you still have an NSR125, can you measure the fork diameter, distance between the fork centres (on the top yoke) and, if possible, the offset of the yoke.

Yup worked it out... the circlip is less critical as the replacement cable doesn't have a groove to fit it(!) I guess I'll just have to do without  :-\ what is more critical is I discovered the reason the old cable was stuck is that the choke had siezed in the carb  :(
Fork diameter and the distance between the forks I can do, although probably only roughly (unless I can find a verynear gauge *and* remember how to read the scale!) By offset do you mean how much the forks are set forward of the headstock? (It's a NSR125R we have btw which is different from the NSR..)
Btw, do you have a spare XBR carb lying around that you could sell me in a hurry?!?  :)
(and some fresh skin for my knuckles now I've reminded myself how easy Honda made it to remove the carb... >:( )

Ok... having received the replacement carb from GC (cheers boss  :) the cash should be on route later today, and yes, the diaphraghm was your problem. Gimme a shout sometime and I'll tell you how I know  ;) )  I now (finally) understand how the choke operates...

Well actually I understand how the choke *should* operate... and that the reason mine doesn't is that the plunger is siezed into the carb body  :(
And guess what bit *wasn't* in the replacement carb I got...?

Yup, the choke plunger  :( anyone got a spare lying about that they could drop into an envelope and send to me??
I have a range of other XBR bits we could do a swap with... or I could order a new replacement in return (I need to get *something* MOT'd in a big hurry as the MZ runs out of mot next wednesday and I'm waiting on mot critical parts from Germany just now  ::) )

Smudge, the choke plunger was in a separate little cardboard box wrapped up with the carb, I told you I'd send both.

Couldn't find the link for your pm  ???
Found the thing, but then discovered that my aftermarket cable doesn't fit properly  ::) I can probably shave it down to fit though. Also didn't manage to get the diaphragm out of my carb as the securing screws have siezed solid in the body (decided to leave drilling them out for another day) but I re-seated the diaphraghm on the carb GC sent me and it *seems* better... I'm still not convinced but I guess the only way to know for sure is to give it a try! I'm having the usual minor dramas with siezed fasteners etc amplified tenfold by the facts that this outfit went to the Elefant and back and has sat parked (neglected) in the garden for the best part of a year! It really is in hideous condition, but I reckon with work (and prolific bodging, erm, I mean "adaptation to circumvent potential/actual problems") I can probably get it running and legal  :)
If you're passing of an evening though you're welcome to stop by and sit in the garage pointing and laughing or offering constructive advice, brews are free  ;)

Aye Smudge,

Thank you for the invite, but I'll no come and gloat or hinder you.  ;D

You could come up here and do the same, whilst I vent my spleen on some poor unsuspecting grunge futtock of dubious parentage from the Orient or the Italian peninsula! :o

Unlike old Whitworth stuff made from 'girders', pot metal wi' fine dinky threads dosnae appreciate  corrosion. But then we know something else supposedly built wi something instead of girders which doesnae like corrosion either! :-[ Civil engineers!! Architects!! Dreamers all of them :o Sorry that's ma dickie spleen again.

Goodnight, Bill.

lol, yup I like working on the landy because the answer to corrosion is to use a bigger lever/hammer as appropriate   ;D
I've wondered if Enfields or Dneprs would be a good thing for similar reasons!

As to the bridge, nothing beats the lunacy of Politicians making arbitary decisions which cause freshly built roads / tolls to be demolished / re-arranged at huge expense, just before they come into full use, just to score a few votes  :o

On the plus side... if I make it to the annual rally this year and take the outfit I stand an excellent chance of winning any prize for the worst condition/scruffiest outfit, or even bike  ;D
Goodnight all....  ;)
