Measuring string....
« on: September 12, 2006, 12:00:54 PM »
Not really a prob and no real answer.  I have to get a cast wheel machined back by 10mm at the hub - any thoughts how much this should cost.  I seem to be the guy who thinks he has got a good deal for getting a penny bun for 2p, only to find everyone else gets them for 1/2p.

Aye Rog,

I'll stick my neck out.

Set up wheel in lathe, turn off 10mm ( you don't say where, but I assume reduction in overall hub width), 'cash', £20 - £30. Through the books, £40!

Now I'll stand back for the slagging! ;-)

Cheers, Bill

Bloody wheels!! Pain in the arse the lot of them! Haven't a clue Rog, I would expect under 50 quid, but You'd kick yourself if you went for the cheap option and they goofed it up :-0

Are you sure the chain will clear the tyre with the sprocket in the new position ?

Steve - yup the chain will clear - have stuck a straight edge across it a few times - the rim is suited to a 140 or a 150 tyre and there is 'just' clearence on a 150.  Get funny looks in the local Aprillia bike shop measuring up all the RS125's...  There is loads of clearence in the RS swinger (not that I am using one) and the bikes they race I think they even squeeze up to 160 - may be wrong though.  Thanks for asking the Q though - I will check again. My Grandad used to say - measure twice, cut once.  I say measure 10 times and still bugger it up. Any one got a spare 20mm wheel spindle - about 'that' long - holding hands out - the Aprillia one is too short for the Yamaha swingarm.

There's a bloke here in Cardiff who would do it at a good price, do you want me to ask him?

Hi GC that would be good.  It is a 17" wheel and I need the hub turned back and six holes in the hub drilled and tapped M6.  If you can ask.  I have been put in touch with a guy at Margam too who may or may not be able to do it.  SO many options are better than none.
