Oh horlicks!! Exhaust bracket failure :-(
« on: October 31, 2007, 07:31:29 PM »

Got home from work feeling happy with bike and life generally only to notice exhaust wagging about when I got off bike, then noticed the melted edge to my sidepanel...

Look what happens to alloy brackets after 30,000+ miles on a single  :(

and just to keep things fun, I'm told now that BSA Regal no longer do spares for MuZ's and that there is no official improter yet appointed  :(
Looks like I'll be doing some drilling and filing then  :-\

hey smudge

1.  Make it yourself!  You are Scottish, handsome and extremely talented, 3 traits we share.  (I am also very mean)

2.  If not, he'res the post from the MZOG list:

A new MZ importer and spares supplier has been appointed in the UK.
They are Graham's Motorcycles in Taunton
http://www.grahamsmotorcycles.com/index.htm
I spoke to them this morning and they'll be able to supply spares for
the Yamaha, 125 and 1000cc fourstroke models, but not 2 strokes or
Rotax engined. They are in the process of setting up an Ebay shop so
you can order spares on line, take PayPal, and will accept orders from
around the world. They have parts books for the 125 and 1000 models
as .pdf files and these will be available soon as downloads from their
site. If you've got a Skorpion it would be a lot easier if you used
part numbers from the parts book available here:
http://www.mzregalia.com/page4.htm

Hope its of use.  Speak to you soon,

andy

Cheers Andy :)

1. Shhhh, people will talk!  :-[  :D
But yeah, I have my eye on a flat spanner at work which might well turn into a couple of exhaust hangers  ;) ;D

2. Useful, wish I could find a parts book for the Baghira / Mastiff though  :-\

But good links, cheers mate  :)

Hmmm top tip, for ease of fabrication *don't* use decent quality spanners to cut up into brackets!

I've cut them into blanks (one ok, one ugly  :-[ ) and drilled out the holes, cutting grinding and filing has taken bl**dy HOURS! and I still have to file out the holes to the correct (large) size...

Doubt they'll wear through like the alloy ones though  ;)

Must have a look at mine too. They don't seem to rattle but there are various bits on the bike which dont work, electrics mainly. I read the exhaust weighs 20kg !

I don't have an owners handbook so here's a question, hope it doesn't come across as too moronic.  With the oil in frame design when should I be looking for the correct reading, is it like a dry sump system, ie should I warm the engine up before checking the oil level or check it cold?
cheers
Julian.

Yep you should apparently warm up the engine for five minutes or so, then run it at "moderate revs" for thirty seconds then idle for about a minute iirc, then switch off and check the oil level. They didn't say anything about sacrificing chickens or standing on one leg but I'm not so sure....  ;)

Personally I let it idle for a little while then check it. Apparently you shouldn't check it "hot" as that gives a false reading!

Isn't it amazing how complicated people can make the simplest tasks  ???

My brackets are now sat in the garage with a coat of Finnegans No1 and a coat of black smoothrite hopefully curing nicely. Two topcoats would have been better but I can't afford the bike to be off the road any longer.
The blister on my hand from yesterdays filing is also curing slowly!!  :o  ::)

Why thank you  ;D
Brackets are sorted... and I'm hoping the vibration I felt on the run home today was my paranoia and not the beginnings of major engine woes...  :-\ :(
Half of me was saying "you're imagining it, it's a single, of course it vibrates" and the other half was saying "oh s**t, that feels worse than I remember... I wonder how long the small end/big end usually lasts on XTZ660 engines...., wonder what the balancer system is... wonder what else it could be... :-\"
