Another SRX Rebuild
« on: July 26, 2007, 06:34:11 PM »
Hi all,
Just joined today after getting my old 1986 SRX600(1XL) in bits. It's been outside for a few years under a cover with a lot of spiders for company! I was wondering what the parts situation is like for these bikes now. Can you still get new parts for them? I'm going to start with something easy and overhaul the forks so I'll need to get hold of bushes and seals.

Most parts are still available, try looking up Kedo on the web a good german company for bits.

Aye jase,

Your local Yamaha dealer can get most things as well. All those 'little things' that make the difference between it being easy to build and an absolute ***! which leaks. Use genuine Gaskets, especially for the head cylinder base and outer crankcase covers. They aren't cheap, but skating through a series of bends with a new built, run in motor and the rear tyre looking like the Torry Canyon hit it, with your wife following on her bike and frantically waving as the oil covers her visor is not recommended. Let me know if you need a manual.

Regards, Bill.

and a prts list?
good luck...it's a common sense sort of bike, no technical nightmares, and as has been said most bit available from yamaha, the internet and various web based companies. all you need is money, time, an understanding partner ....

but, during the rebuild I would definitely reccommend:-

Stainless braided break hoses all round and some uprated sintered pads.

if you are stripping the engine, then check the bore and piston, any signs of a 'pick up' usually at the back left quarter will almost certainly mean a rebore and new piston (£150 ish) and a new oil pump (£100 ish) I know the oil pump is expensive, but if you are in any doubt about its serviceability have it checked by an expert, 'cos if it is dodgy (seals knacked, or lobes marked) and you go for a rebore...you WILL pinch the engine up in no time. at the least I would have the bore 'glaze busted/honed' and get new rings. the other point worth checking if you have the engine split, is the gear cluster, especially 5th, I personally have been very lucky, none of my many SRX's have had a problem with 5th (yet!) but there are many in the TC who will tell you it is one of the weak points of an otherwise fairly robust engine.

replace the headstock bearings with a roller kit

new fork seals and dust seals

of course the list can be as long as your pocket is deep....but doing the labour yourself and taking your time sourcing the parts does help keep the cost under control (this of course is where the 'understanding partner' comes into play)

good luck

Theres plenty of us here who are happy to advise/help/laugh etc

cheers

Talking of brakes, when I bought mine it had been standing unused for a couple of years, the front ones had seized and the cylinders were a nightmare to move. When I took it to the shop, as brake fluid pressure wouldn't move them, they had to weld large bits of metal to the cylinders to budge them (I am not sure exactly what technique they used after that). In the long run it would have been cheaper to replace them as four hours labour wasn't cheap!
I had about a centimeters movement at the lever so you will know if you have a problem there.
Good luck and enjoy it.
